The Space

Captain John Keais Hoyt built this Queen Anne Victorian in 1885, a Confederate officer who had served in Stonewall Jackson’s brigade before settling in the mountains west of Asheville, and named the property Engadine after a valley in Switzerland that the surrounding landscape reminded him of. The house went up over ten years, and the family lived in a cabin on the land while it was built, finally moving into the finished mansion in 1895.

Honey Hill is the property’s outdoor event site, a west-facing spot on the 12 acres set up for sunset ceremonies with the Blue Ridge foothills as the backdrop rather than a built structure. The main house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was converted from a private home into an inn in 1994 and still carries its original architectural character rather than a redone interior.

Capacity & Layout

This property is built around lodging as much as event space: the Victorian house holds five guest rooms with private baths, and six separate mountain cabins on the grounds sleep up to 40 guests combined, so a wedding weekend here tends to be smaller and more contained, with much of the guest list actually staying on site rather than driving in for the day.

Honey Hill, the west-facing outdoor venue, is where the ceremony itself happens, set apart from both the main house and the cabins so the event has its own footprint on the property. Because lodging and event space share the same 12 acres, a couple planning here is generally working toward an intimate, weekend-long gathering rather than a large single-day reception.

Amenities

Guest rooms in the main house include private baths, sitting areas, central heat and air, and seasonal gas fireplaces, with the third-floor Engadine Suite adding its own sitting area and a whirlpool tub for two. The six cabins are pet-friendly and come with fully equipped kitchens, useful for a multi-day wedding weekend where guests are cooking some of their own meals.

Outdoor amenities across the property include firepits, hammocks and Adirondack chairs, giving guests places to gather outside of scheduled events. The house was originally built with then-modern technology, central heat from a coal furnace, electricity from a water-powered generator, gravity-supplied running water, and while those original systems are long updated, the history is part of what the inn is known for. Inn rooms are reserved for adult guests only.

Location & Getting There

Engadine sits 15 minutes west of downtown Asheville, close enough for guests to make a day trip into the city but far enough out that the property itself feels like a mountain retreat rather than a suburban stop. The drive in crosses into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains before reaching the 12-acre grounds.

With the ceremony held outdoors at Honey Hill and guests spread across a historic house and six separate cabins rather than one central hall, sound for a wedding here has to work as an open-air, west-facing setup rather than an enclosed ballroom system, and a DJ running the ceremony and any reception music needs to plan for that outdoor footprint instead of a contained indoor room.
