What began as an 11.7-acre lease on Murray Avenue in 1961 now includes Magic Wings Butterfly House, the Dinosaur Trail, and animal habitats stretched across the property, so a wedding held here sits inside a working museum rather than a room built only for events.

For a couple, that history shows up as texture: the campus grew in stages through the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, so no two corners of it look alike. A reception can lean on the indoor science center building for a controlled, climate-safe setting, or spread guests across the outdoor paths and habitat areas for a ceremony backdrop no built venue could match. Either way, the museum’s own decades of expansion are what gives the space its variety.

Capacity & Layout

The property does not carry a single posted wedding capacity, and that is because it is not one room, it is a campus: the main science center building, Magic Wings Butterfly House, the Bayer Insectarium, and outdoor zones such as Earth Moves, Hideaway Woods, and the Farmyard all function as distinct areas. For planning, that means a couple picks a footprint to fit their guest count rather than shrinking their guest list to fit a fixed hall.

The indoor building is wheelchair and stroller friendly with elevators between its two stories, and the outdoor grounds are threaded with paved pathways built for mobility aids, so a layout that moves guests between an indoor ceremony and an outdoor reception, or the reverse, does not require carrying anyone over rough ground. The Picnic Dome offers a shaded outdoor gathering point if a couple wants covered space without going fully indoors.

Amenities

Sprout Cafe and Elements Coffee Bar operate on site, giving a wedding party a built-in source of food and drink beyond whatever caterer is brought in. Free parking runs along both sides of Murray Avenue, and a covered three-story parking deck on the south side is also free and open from 8am to 6pm, which matters for guests arriving in formalwear who would rather not walk far or worry about a meter.

The Ellerbe Creek Railway, a train ride dating back to 1977, is available for $4.50 for members and $6 for non-members, an option a couple could offer guests as a between-events activity that a typical banquet hall simply does not have.
