The Space

The Durham Arts Council building opened in 1906 as Central High School, designed in neoclassical style by architect Oliver Duke Wheeler, and served as Durham’s City Hall from 1926 to 1977 before the Arts Council moved in and completed a $5.3 million renovation in 1988. At 52,000 square feet across three levels, it carries the scale of its municipal past into its current life as an arts center. The building’s original dome and pediment were removed in 1924 during its years as City Hall, so the neoclassical facade a couple sees today reflects that later, plainer municipal look rather than Wheeler’s original 1906 design.

That renovation added a glass atrium at the original entrance, and the building now houses four public galleries, the 174-seat PSI Theatre, two dance studios, rehearsal space, and outdoor terraces and gardens. Nine resident arts organizations keep offices inside, so a couple booking here is holding their wedding inside a building that is genuinely in daily use as an arts center, not a rented-out shell, one that hosted more than 5,000 programs and over 400,000 visitors in its most recent fiscal year alone.

Capacity & Layout

PSI Theatre seats 174 on upholstered, raked tiered seating in front of a flat grey Marley floor stage, a fixed-seat room suited to a ceremony a couple wants everyone watching head-on. The building’s flexible meeting spaces can be combined to hold up to 300, which is the number to plan around for a reception that needs open floor rather than theater seating, since the theatre’s fixed rows do not convert into a dance floor the way an open meeting space can.

The two dance studios, Rollins and Wachovia, were renovated in 2011 with sprung Marley floors, ballet barres, floor-to-ceiling mirrors, and their own sound systems, at 1,464 and 1,425 square feet respectively. Either one works as a self-contained reception or rehearsal space, and the mirrored walls are a real consideration for a couple deciding where to place a head table or a dance floor, since a mirrored wall doubles the visual footprint of the room in every photo taken across it.

Amenities

A catering kitchen supports off-site caterers working the event, and the four galleries, Allenton, Semans, Ella Fountain Pratt, and the Pre-Function Corridor, are open daily and free to the public, giving guests a place to walk during a cocktail hour beyond the assigned event room. Outdoor terraces and the Ruth Carver Gardens add sculpture and seasonal flowers for photos without leaving the property.

Parking is available in the adjacent Manning Place lot with handicapped spaces, plus the Durham Centre Parking Garage across the street, and the building offers elevator access, ramps, ADA-compliant doors, wheelchair-accessible restrooms on all three levels, and a complimentary wheelchair on request. Free WiFi runs throughout the building as well, useful for a couple coordinating vendors or streaming the ceremony to family who could not travel.

Location & Getting There

The building sits in downtown Durham’s Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, standing hours of 9am to 9pm Monday through Saturday and 1pm to 4pm Sunday, a public building drawing over 400,000 visitors a year across more than 5,000 programs, figures that put its foot traffic closer to a museum than to a typical private event venue.

That public traffic and the building’s working-arts-center identity mean a couple is sharing the address with resident organizations and daily programming, not renting an empty building for the day. For sound, the PSI Theatre’s raked seating and Marley stage give a DJ a defined, contained room to work, while the dance studios’ sprung floors and mirrored walls carry sound differently and call for speaker placement away from the glass, a distinction worth walking through with whichever room ends up hosting the reception.
