The Space
The Dorothy and Roy Park Alumni Center is a 59,000-square-foot facility on the southern shore of Lake Raleigh on NC State’s Centennial Campus. The center opened in 2006 after a 20-year planning effort and is named for Roy H. Park, Sr., a 1931 NC State alumnus and trustee, and his wife Dorothy. Dorothy Park herself provided a crucial personal gift of $5 million in 2004 to complete the funding when construction could not begin without additional funds.
The building is a statement of architectural elegance: Italian marble flooring, double curving staircases, crystal chandelier lighting, and walnut-trimmed fireplaces welcome visitors throughout the public areas. A pair of wolf statues stands at the entrance. The centerpiece is the grand reception room, featuring 28-foot ceilings and a full wall of windows overlooking Lake Raleigh, framing water views and natural light during daytime events.
Capacity & Layout
The center seats 150 guests and offers eight distinct event spaces, providing flexibility for different event types and sizes. The grand ballroom with its 28-foot ceilings and lake views serves as the main reception space, while the Chancellor’s Reception Room provides backup capacity for 100 guests. Additional spaces include the Hood Boardroom, conference rooms, and an outdoor terrace overlooking the lake for ceremonies or cocktail hours.
The layout allows couples to separate ceremony, cocktails, and reception into different rooms or to flow guests through multiple spaces as the evening progresses. The grand ballroom is the dominant space, but the supporting rooms give structure and elegance to the day.
Amenities
The center includes private parking, and Mitchell Casteel is the exclusive on-site caterer, offering buffet, plated, station, hors d’oeuvres, and family-style dining options. Four bar packages are available, ranging from beer and wine to ultra-premium liquor service. A bridal suite is available three hours before the reception. The venue is wheelchair accessible throughout. Climate control is throughout, and the facility is fully indoors.
Mitchell Casteel’s exclusive partnership means couples work with a single, vetted catering team, simplifying logistics and ensuring consistent service quality. The bar packages offer flexibility for different budgets and preferences, and the private parking and on-site catering reduce coordination headaches.
Location & Getting There
The Park Alumni Center sits on NC State’s Centennial Campus on the southern shore of Lake Raleigh in Raleigh, North Carolina. The campus location places the venue within walking distance of campus buildings and the lake, giving it a university setting that feels both sophisticated and integrated into the broader community. Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina, with easy access from surrounding towns and approximately 200 miles from Charlotte to the west and the coast to the east.
The grand reception room is a large interior space with 28-foot ceilings, Italian marble flooring, crystal chandeliers, walnut finishes, and a full wall of windows. The high ceiling and formal architecture will project sound well, and the hard surfaces (marble, wood) will carry it effectively. The windows and scale mean the room is bright and open-feeling, and a DJ booth positioned along one side will reach all corners. The supporting rooms have lower ceilings and more intimate proportions, so acoustic behavior varies depending on which spaces are used for different parts of the event.
