The Space
Discovery Place Science is a 72,000-square-foot hands-on science museum located in Uptown Charlotte, built on North Tryon Street to catalyze development in that neighborhood. The museum opened in 1981 as a nature museum and expanded to cover physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. In 2010, the organization underwent a major renovation, and in 2016 it rebranded as Discovery Place Science, the Uptown location of the organization. It is ranked a top 10 U.S. science museum by National Geographic and received the National Association of Catering and Events 2018 Venue of the Year award.
The museum is a three-story interactive facility featuring a spectacular Charlotte Observer IMAX Dome Theatre, the largest IMAX Dome Theater in the Carolinas, which opened in 1991. For events, the venue offers multiple rental options: the full museum (up to 1,800 guests across all three levels), the Tryon Suite with three interlocking spaces (Tryon Lounge, Tryon Gallery, and Windows on Tryon, up to 300 guests), and the Education Studio (up to 75 guests with smart boards and break-out rooms).
Capacity & Layout
The Tryon Suite accommodates up to 300 guests and consists of three distinct interlocking rooms, allowing flexible configurations for ceremonies, cocktail hours, and receptions. The Education Studio holds up to 75 and works for smaller, more intimate events or meetings. The full museum rental opens three floors of interactive exhibits and the IMAX theatre for a completely immersive experience with up to 1,800 guests, though this is for large corporate or community events rather than typical weddings.
The Tryon Suite is the most practical wedding choice, offering elegant event space with the prestige and novelty of a world-class museum setting. Three interlocking rooms give couples the option to separate ceremony, cocktails, and dancing, or to use all three as one grand space.
Amenities
Discovery Place provides a full bar with ABC permits on-site for events, giving couples the option to serve alcohol. Convenient parking is available in the Carol Grotnes Belk Complex at the corner of Sixth and Church Streets. The venue is wheelchair accessible throughout. Climate control is maintained, and the space is fully indoors. Access to the IMAX theatre and the interactive exhibits (if renting the full museum) adds an experiential element beyond a traditional ballroom.
The museum setting is unique, and the architectural sophistication of the Tryon Suite provides an elegant backdrop. Couples typically arrange their own catering, and outside food vendors are often allowed. The venue staff handles setup and breakdown.
Location & Getting There
Discovery Place Science sits in Uptown Charlotte, two blocks from the Lynx 7th Street Station light rail, which connects via the LYNX Blue Line and city buses. The location is downtown and urban, making it easily accessible by public transportation and walkable from nearby hotels. Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina, with Raleigh-Durham to the east and Greensboro and the Triad to the north. The venue is designed as a public cultural anchor and is integrated into the downtown corridor.
The Tryon Suite is a fully enclosed indoor space on the upper floors of a museum building. Hard surfaces, architectural details, and the three-room layout will carry sound well. A DJ setup benefits from the defined spaces, and the interconnecting doors allow sound to spread from a central booth across the three rooms or stay isolated within one, giving flexibility for ceremony, cocktails, and dancing in separate periods.
