The Space
The Dennis A. Wicker Civic and Conference Center opened in May 1991 on the Lee Main Campus of Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, North Carolina. Named in 1995 to honor Dennis A. Wicker, a North Carolina state representative and later the state’s 31st Lieutenant Governor, the facility was built with an award-winning architectural design. The center houses at least 14 different spaces, from large exhibition halls to intimate meeting rooms, plus a state-of-the-art 4,000-square-foot conference center completed around 2017-2021. A 10,000-square-foot expansion added three break-out rooms, gallery and vendor spaces, and a teaching kitchen for the college’s Culinary Arts Department.
The main Exhibition Hall can seat 1,300 standing or 600 banquet-style. The Auditorium is a 198-seat lecture hall with a large stage and flanking dressing rooms, suitable for smaller ceremonies or entertainment. The Patio overlooking a lawn provides outdoor space for cocktails or receptions. The facility features free Wi-Fi throughout, a full-service catering kitchen with warming ovens, steamers, ice machine, walk-in cooler/freezer, and dishwashing equipment, plus place settings for 500.
Capacity & Layout
The Exhibition Hall is the primary reception space, seating 600 banquet-style or standing 1,300 in a theater layout. The Auditorium with its stage and dressing rooms serves smaller ceremonies or entertainment moments. Six meeting rooms of various sizes offer flexibility for breakout events, cocktail hours, or vendor displays. The Board Room is accessible by elevator as well as stairs, supporting accessibility needs.
An outdoor covered plaza connects the newer addition to the existing lobby, creating a protected transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The Patio and outdoor lawn offer options for sunset receptions or outdoor dancing. Multiple entry points and room configurations allow couples to customize the flow of their celebration.
Amenities
The venue provides tables, chairs, and extensive catering equipment. The full-service kitchen is on-site, supporting either the venue’s own catering or coordination with outside caterers. Free parking is available, a significant cost savings compared to larger market venues. The facility includes free Wi-Fi throughout, a modern amenity for guests. The 4,000-square-foot conference center offers additional meeting and event space beyond the main hall.
Loading dock and service areas support smooth vendor setup. Electricity and audio-visual infrastructure are available, though you’ll want to confirm specifics when booking. The two-building configuration and outdoor plaza mean events can spill across multiple areas and a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces.
Location & Getting There
Sanford is in Lee County, North Carolina, roughly 30 minutes south of Raleigh in the Piedmont region. The venue sits on a community college campus in a suburban setting, surrounded by parking lots and institutional grounds rather than a downtown or resort landscape. Getting there from Raleigh takes about 45 minutes via Highway 1. The setting is quiet and removed from tourist attractions, making it a practical, no-frills venue for couples prioritizing space and affordability.
The Exhibition Hall is a large interior space with hard flooring and a high ceiling, creating natural acoustics that project sound well across the room. The stage area in the Auditorium suggests the facility is accustomed to amplified music and entertainment. A DJ setup in the Exhibition Hall will reach the entire space effectively without excessive volume. The Patio’s outdoor design means sound carries and disperses, requiring assessment of neighboring buildings and any noise ordinances.
