The Space
The Deauville Inn began as the Whelan Hotel in 1881, built by Irish immigrant James Carothers on Corson’s Inlet to serve the fishing and whaling trades. By the 1920s it became the Deauville Inn and flourished through Prohibition, with rumors of a casino in the upper rooms and performances by famous entertainers including Jimmie Durante and Sophie Tucker. After suffering heavy damage in the 1962 storm, it sat abandoned until bartender Walter Carpenter and his wife Gloria resurrected it in 1980. Hurricane Sandy damaged it again in 2012, forcing a complete kitchen renovation. Dr. Tim Fox purchased the historic property in October 2019 and undertook extensive restoration while preserving its 1920s character.
Today the Deauville operates as a full-service waterfront restaurant and event venue with six distinct indoor and outdoor environments. The Oyster Bar focuses on fresh, locally sourced seafood and champagne service. The Sunset Deck is a 50-foot waterfront bar overlooking Strathmere Bay. The Sandbar is beachfront casual dining on the sand. The Dining Room is an indoor reservation-only space with bay views and upscale seafood and steaks. The Docks offer dockside dining with boat slips and trained dock crew for guests arriving by water.
Capacity & Layout
The venue accommodates up to 260 seated guests across its various indoor and outdoor spaces. Couples can divide their celebration across multiple areas, holding ceremony in one spot and reception in another, or using the entire venue for a single large celebration. The beach area works for ceremonies, the Sunset Deck for cocktails and dancing, and the Dining Room for dinner.
The outdoor areas have tent coverage with clear overhead panels available to weather rain while preserving views. The indoor spaces provide full weather protection and air-conditioning. The layered, multi-space design means even a large wedding can feel intimate in parts.
Amenities
The venue includes multiple bars and full catering. The on-site culinary team handles food service, and the recently renovated kitchen supports complex plating and service. Tables, chairs, linens, and place settings are provided. Fresh floral centerpieces are part of standard packages. A state-of-the-art audio and visual system is included, allowing for professional sound reinforcement and lighting effects.
Parking is available on the property. Accessibility meets ADA standards. The boat slips and dock crew accommodate guests arriving by water, a feature few venues offer. The inn operates seasonally from April through January, so couples should plan accordingly.
Location & Getting There
Strathmere sits on the southern New Jersey shore, on a bay side of a barrier island with access to both open water and protected inlets. The setting is quieter and more residential than beach towns to the north. The inn sits directly on Strathmere Bay, with water views from nearly every space. Getting there from New York or Philadelphia is roughly 2 to 2.5 hours. Corson’s Inlet provides a water connection for boats arriving from other bays or the Atlantic.
The mix of indoor and outdoor spaces means sound management varies by area. The Dining Room is a traditional interior space where a DJ will project into hard walls and likely carpeted areas. The Sunset Deck is semi-outdoor and open to the bay, so sound carries and disperses. The Oyster Bar and Sandbar are more casual, often with live acoustic music or lower-volume DJ work. Coordinate with the venue about which spaces will host music and dancing, as the multi-space layout offers natural flexibility.
