The Space

Country Park was built in 1934 by the Public Works Administration under the direction of Greensboro’s Mayor Paul Lindley, with initial clearing work by the Civil Works Administration beginning in 1933. The park officially opened on July 4, 1934, on 217 acres of naturally wooded terrain with two six-acre ponds. Today the entire Battleground Parks District comprises over 450 acres, including Country Park, three additional parks, one historic site, and the Greensboro Science Center. The park is adjacent to Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, the site of a significant Revolutionary War battle, adding historical weight to the setting.

The landscape is mature forest, open fields, and water. Two stocked fishing lakes anchor the property, home to largemouth bass, crappie, brim, and channel catfish. The park has over six miles of roads and trails total, with 1.67 miles of paved trail accessible by walking or wheelchair. A canopy walk, BMX bike course, carousel, and Mountain Bike Zone serve daytime park users, but these do not conflict with evening or private events.

Capacity & Layout

Five picnic shelters are available for rental. Two of these shelters are ADA-accessible (Shelters #1 and #2), and the others serve small to mid-size gatherings. The park is open 8am daily and closes seasonally: 5pm in winter, 7pm in spring and fall, 8pm in summer. The loop road is closed to vehicular traffic from 4:15pm on weekdays and all day on weekends and holidays, which affects guest arrival logistics, particularly if you have events on weekends.
