The Space

The Cotton Company occupies a historic 1914 building that was originally the W.W. Holding Cotton Exchange Warehouse. Cotton merchants used the building to store and sell cotton from local farms, which would then ship by rail to textile mills. The building was extensively renovated by Bob and Elizabeth Johnson starting in 2000 and reopened as a marketplace and event venue. The owners earned the Anthemion Award in 2001 for historic renovation and adaptive reuse, a recognition that reflects the quality of the work. Today, the ground floor is a marketplace with over 40 vendor booths selling home decor, clothing, and gifts; the second floor is The Graham, a dedicated 5,000 square foot event space with soaring ceilings, exposed wood beams, and original brickwork.

The Graham is loft-style, with track lighting and a large north-facing window in an adjacent two-story building that was historically used for cotton fiber classing. The exposed brick walls and wooden beams reinforce the building’s industrial past without feeling cold. A dance floor is built in, and the space reads as open and flexible. The active railroad tracks still run on the back of the building, a remnant of when cotton bales were hoisted onto cars; this historical detail adds character to the setting.

Capacity & Layout

The Graham accommodates 150 seated guests or 200 standing. This range suits mid-size celebrations. The venue supplies tables and chairs as part of the rental; linens are not included, giving you control over that detail. One hour of setup and one hour of cleanup are included at no extra cost, meaningful on a busy event day.

The space works for both ceremony and reception in the same room. The high ceilings and open floor plan mean you can reconfigure without feeling cramped. Outside vendors and planners are welcome, so you can bring in your own catering if you prefer.

Amenities

Beer and wine are permitted on-site. If you want to serve liquor, you will need a one-day permit obtained 15 days prior to the event; the venue does not hold a liquor license. Events must end by 11pm. Basic sweeping and mopping are included in cleanup. Wheelchair access is available. Free public parking is within walking distance in downtown Wake Forest’s historic district.

The marketplace on the ground floor adds a layer of character to the building and occasionally means daytime noise from vendor activity, though this would not be an issue for evening events. The Anthemion Award reflects the building’s significance in Wake Forest’s history, and couples often mention the industrial architecture and brick as a strong visual anchor for photographs.
