The Space
The Cloth Mill occupies a genuine cotton mill that operated from 1897 until 1984, part of the historic Eno River Mill campus in downtown Hillsborough, and the mill itself is listed on the National Register. Nicole Clayton, who already ran On the Rocks Bartending LLC, came across the former 10,000-square-foot fabric warehouse space in early 2015 and turned it into the venue, so the room’s industrial character is original rather than a themed build-out.
Inside, the space keeps its exposed brick walls, original wood beams and columns, hardwood floors, and cathedral windows under high ceilings, the actual bones of a working textile mill rather than reclaimed materials assembled to look that way. An exclusive outdoor courtyard extends the venue beyond the mill’s four walls, giving a couple both an industrial interior and a separate open-air space to work with.
Capacity & Layout
The venue holds a maximum of 250 guests for both ceremony and reception, and either can happen indoors in the mill space or outside in the courtyard, so a couple is not locked into one layout by default. Only one wedding is scheduled per day, meaning a couple has full run of both the mill interior and the courtyard rather than splitting time or space with another event.
Dressing suites are provided on site, so the wedding party can get ready in the building itself rather than arriving fully dressed from a hotel. Given the mill’s cathedral windows and hardwood floors, natural light plays a real role in how the room reads through the day, something worth factoring into ceremony timing for a couple who wants that light in their photos.
Amenities
Catering runs through an exclusive list of approved caterers rather than an open outside-vendor policy, which a couple should factor into early planning conversations. The venue holds a full ABC license covering beer, wine, and liquor, so bar service does not require a separate outside permit or a bring-your-own arrangement, simplifying that piece of the day considerably.
Because the building sits on a National Register-listed historic mill campus, the property carries a level of architectural detail, in the original brick, beams, and windows, that a newly constructed venue cannot replicate. The exclusive outdoor courtyard functions as both a practical secondary space and part of what makes the venue distinct: cocktail hour or portraits outside, then the mill’s cathedral windows and brick for the reception itself.
Location & Getting There
The Cloth Mill sits in downtown Hillsborough, less than five minutes from I-40 and I-85 and about 15 minutes from downtown Durham, an easy reach for guests coming from either the interstate or the broader Triangle area. That location keeps the mill convenient for out-of-town guests without giving up the small-downtown feel of Hillsborough itself.
Being close to two interstates and to Durham makes hotel logistics simpler for a couple with a lot of traveling guests, since lodging options in Durham are a short drive rather than a long haul. For sound, the mill’s brick walls, hardwood floors, and high cathedral-windowed ceiling are the hard, resonant surfaces of an old industrial building, so a DJ setup there carries with real presence, while the separate courtyard offers a quieter, open-air option for cocktail hour.
