The Space

Inside the Briggs Hardware Building on Fayetteville Street, a four-story structure completed in 1874 that was, at the time, celebrated as the tallest building in eastern Carolina and Raleigh’s first skyscraper, the City of Raleigh Museum keeps its exhibits and event spaces today. Briggs Hardware ran its store out of the building for 120 years before relocating in 1994, and the structure is now considered Raleigh’s only late-nineteenth-century commercial building to survive essentially unaltered since it was built.

After Briggs moved out, the A.J. Fletcher Foundation and Preservation North Carolina bought and rehabilitated the building starting in 1997, and the museum, which had first opened in 1993 as a nonprofit founded on historian Beth Crabtree’s vision and Mary Cates’ persistence, occupied the ground and lower levels once the restoration was complete. The City of Raleigh took over operational control of the museum in July 2012, and the building has held National Register of Historic Places status since 1973.

Capacity & Layout

The museum offers three distinct rental spaces: the Lobby Gallery, which holds up to 50 seated or 60 standing; the larger A.J. Fletcher Foundation Gallery, which scales up to 120 seated or 150 standing; and the Woman’s Club of Raleigh Classroom on the lower level, which holds up to 50 guests. That range gives a couple room to pick a space that matches an intimate ceremony or a fuller reception without renting more square footage than the guest list needs.

Rental hours run Monday through Sunday from 4 p.m. to midnight, with a separate window Sunday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon, hours built around the museum’s own daytime exhibit schedule rather than an events calendar that starts whenever a couple wants it to. Tables and chairs are included in the rental, and a small kitchen and additional restrooms on the lower level round out the practical side of hosting a reception inside a working museum.

Amenities

The building keeps its original hardwood floors and a pressed-tin ceiling, both details that carry through the museum’s rental spaces and give a reception a genuinely old material palette rather than a modern build-out dressed to look historic. A four-story skylight opening runs through all the floors, a detail that adds natural light into what would otherwise be a fairly enclosed commercial building.

Public areas of the building are wheelchair, scooter, and Electric Conveyance Vehicle accessible, with an elevator serving guests on the ground floor, which matters for a wedding guest list spanning multiple generations. The museum also cares for roughly 10,000 artifacts from Raleigh’s history, so a reception here happens inside an active collection rather than an empty rented shell, which is worth mentioning to guests as a bit of context for the room they are standing in.

Location & Getting There

The museum sits on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh, inside a building recognizable for having survived largely unaltered since the late 1800s in a downtown that has otherwise redeveloped around it. There is no reserved on-site parking, but free two-hour parking is available at the Moore Square parking deck, and street parking downtown runs free on weekends, though weekday street parking requires a fee.

For a DJ, the combination of hardwood floors and a pressed-tin ceiling means hard surfaces on both ends of the room, which tends to make a space livelier and more reflective than a room full of carpet and drywall, so sound checks matter more here than in a heavily upholstered ballroom. The four-story skylight running through the building adds height without adding soft material to absorb any of that reflected sound, which is worth planning around when setting speaker placement.
