The Space
Chetola’s story runs back to 1846, when Lot Estes bought the land for five cents an acre and built a home that grew into Silverlake, a summer resort that doubled as an ice house in winter. William Stringfellow renamed it Chetola, a Cherokee word meaning "Haven of Rest," in 1892, and J. Luther Snyder, the Coca-Cola King of the Carolinas, later owned it until his death in 1957.
Rachael Renar and her son Kent Tarbutton bought the resort in 1997 and have preserved its historic character while modernizing it, turning the old Manor House into the eight-suite Bob Timberlake Inn in 2004 and opening the Chetola Sporting Reserve in 2016. The result is a 75-acre lakeside resort that layers a real 19th-century estate underneath a working modern hotel.
Capacity & Layout
Wedding capacity runs from 2 to 250 guests, which covers everything from an intimate elopement to a full-size reception without the resort feeling like the wrong scale either way. Ceremony spots include lakeside locations such as Willow Tree and Peninsula Point along with a lakeside arbor, so a couple gets water in the background without needing to add a rented arch.
Reception space includes a Lakeside Tent on the lake peninsula, the Evergreen Room with its floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, and the more intimate Silverlake Room for up to 30 guests. That range means a couple can match the room to the guest count instead of renting a space built for 250 to host a wedding of 40.
Amenities
Between the 50-room Chetola Lodge, the eight-suite Bob Timberlake Inn, and roughly 260 privately owned condominiums, out-of-town guests have real lodging on the property itself rather than a nearby chain hotel. Timberlake’s Restaurant handles catering and dining, and Headwater’s Pub covers bar service, so food and drink for the weekend stay in-house from rehearsal dinner through brunch.
A full-service spa with five treatment rooms, an indoor heated pool, and the resort’s Orvis-endorsed fly fishing program give a wedding weekend built-in activities beyond the ceremony itself, and the 8-acre Chetola Lake adds paddle boats, kayaks, and paddle boards for guests staying more than one night. Three tennis courts, pickleball courts, an EV charging station, and pet-friendly rooms on the lodge’s first floor round out a property built for guests who are staying a while, not just passing through for the ceremony.
Location & Getting There
Chetola sits within walking distance of downtown Blowing Rock, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, with Charlotte-Douglas International roughly a 107-minute drive for guests flying in from out of state. That combination puts a walkable mountain town on one side of the resort and real regional access on the other. The Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce recognized the resort with its Best Commercial Renovation award in 2019, and golf carts are available to help guests reach the outdoor ceremony sites across the grounds.
The Evergreen Room’s stone fireplace and enclosed walls make it a straightforward room for a DJ to fill with sound for a seated dinner, while the Lakeside Tent on the peninsula is open-air and lake-facing, calling for weather-aware gear the same way an outdoor tent anywhere in the mountains would.
