The Space
Charlotte Country Club has been on its Plaza-Midwood site, four miles east of uptown Charlotte, since 1910, and the golf course a couple sees today traces back to Donald Ross, who expanded the original nine holes to eighteen in 1915 and added grass greens in 1925. Robert Trent Jones reworked holes in the 1960s, and Ron Prichard restored the course again in 2008, work that earned Golf Digest’s Best Remodel of the Year award in 2009.
The 68,000 square foot clubhouse went through its own restoration in 2008 and 2009, and the details that survived that work, original moldings, millwork, chandeliers, and murals, are part of what a couple is actually looking at when they walk through the building. The club has hosted three USGA championships over the decades, the 1972 U.S. Men’s Amateur, the 2000 U.S. Senior Men’s Amateur, and the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur, so the grounds have carried national-level events before a wedding ever gets scheduled there.
Capacity & Layout
The club has not published a set wedding capacity, and the one rule that shapes every event here matters more than a headcount: every function, including wedding receptions, has to be held or sponsored by a member. That single requirement decides who can even book the room before layout or guest count comes into play, so a couple working with a member sponsor should confirm which of the clubhouse’s dining and event spaces that sponsorship makes available.
Beyond the golf course itself, the property includes a full tennis facility with 12 clay courts, 4 hard courts, 3 indoor clay courts, and 2 squash courts, along with a five-pool complex covering competition, diving, adult, children’s, and wading pools. None of that is wedding-day space directly, but it is a useful sense of scale for how much grounds and how many buildings sit around the clubhouse itself.
Amenities
The golf course plays 7,335 yards from the back tees with a 75.9 rating and 146 slope, or 6,808 yards from the back tees and 5,122 from the forward tees at a par of 71, figures that matter more to a golf-minded guest list than to reception planning but that speak to how seriously the club treats its primary amenity.
The club carries real standing beyond Charlotte: it is recognized as a top 20 private club in the United States, a Top-50 Platinum Club of the World by the Club Leaders Forum, and the course ranked 63rd in GolfWeek’s 2012 Classic Courses list, all of which tells a couple this is an established, actively maintained club rather than a fading one.
Location & Getting There
Charlotte Country Club sits in the historic Plaza-Midwood neighborhood, about four miles east of uptown Charlotte, close enough for city-based guests without putting the event downtown itself.
We have worked one event on these grounds, and the historic clubhouse is the room that matters for sound: original moldings, millwork, and plaster surfaces from the 2008 restoration make for a formal indoor space with real presence, different from a modern ballroom’s flatter acoustics, so a DJ setup there is working with a room that has genuine age and character built into how it carries music.
