The Space
Charlotte City Club has moved three times since Mayor Herbert H. Baxter and a group of local business leaders founded it on January 10, 1947: from a space above Union National Bank at Fourth and Tryon, to the Mutual Savings and Loan building in 1962, and finally, on November 29, 1990, to the top two floors of what is now the 121 West Trade building, at the corner of Trade and Tryon in Uptown Charlotte.
The club occupies the 31st and 32nd floors of that 32-story tower, designed by the New York firm Kohn, Pedersen and Fox and completed in 1990, so nearly every room a couple tours here comes with a high-rise view of the Charlotte skyline rather than a ground-floor outlook. A run of renovations, including a 2006 Grill Room update, the 2014 addition of the Hornets Nest, and a $7 million-plus renovation of the Upper Club finished in November 2020, means the rooms in use today are recent work layered onto a decades-old club.
Capacity & Layout
Seated capacity across the club runs 300 to 500 guests, spread across spaces that include the Mecklenburg Room and Queen Charlotte Ballroom for dining and events, private dining rooms for smaller parties, and a Lower Club level set aside for private functions, which gives a couple room to match the scale of their wedding to a specific room rather than one fixed floor plan.
The 2020 renovation added 1,140 square feet of dining room space and expanded the Hornets Nest bar to seat 26 at the bar itself with 40 more guests at surrounding tables, a detail worth knowing for a couple planning a cocktail hour or after-party in that room specifically rather than the main ballroom.
Amenities
The Hornets Nest offers a wine and coffee bar with views of Truist Ballpark and Bank of America Stadium, and the club keeps wine storage for 1,000 or more bottles behind a regal curved stairwell that is part of the interior itself, so a couple with a wine-focused reception has real depth to draw on here.
The Cigar & Billiards Lounge, added in the 2020 renovation with its own outdoor terrace, is the only indoor cigar lounge in Charlotte, a real point of difference for a groom’s party or a late-evening lounge moment. The club also runs a dedicated Business Center with conference rooms and high-speed fiber Wi-Fi throughout, useful for a wedding weekend that includes out-of-town family working remotely.
Location & Getting There
Charlotte City Club sits at the corner of Trade and Tryon Streets in the heart of Uptown, with building parking available and validated for members and guests, so most guests arrive by car into a downtown garage rather than needing a shuttle from outside the city.
We have worked one event on these floors, and the room itself sets the sound experience: this is an indoor, high-rise club with panoramic glass and formal dining rooms rather than an open barn or outdoor tent, so a DJ setup here runs in a contained, carpeted space built for conversation and dancing rather than one that needs to fight outdoor wind or a cavernous echo.
