The Space
Cescaphe Ballroom occupies what was once the Imperial Theater, a grand cinema palace that opened in Northern Liberties in 1913, one of two Imperial Theaters in Philadelphia at the time. The theater closed in 1954 and sat as a warehouse for decades until entrepreneur Joe Volpe recognized the building’s potential in 2002 and began transforming it into an event space, opening it under the name Cescaphe, drawn from his daughters Francesca and Sophia, after he and his wife Andrea founded the company in 2003.
The Ballroom hosted its first event in 2004, and the restoration kept the building’s cathedral ceilings and grand scale while adding crystal chandeliers draped in pearls, antiqued brass hardware, and hardwood floors throughout. Guests enter through a grand staircase, and four Juliet balconies look down over the room from above, a layout that still reads as a theater even with the seats and screen long gone.
Capacity & Layout
Cescaphe Ballroom seats between 150 and 300 guests, a range wide enough to hold both a mid-size wedding and a larger one inside the same Grand Ballroom, which serves as both ceremony and reception space with its own candlelit stage. A standard booking runs a six-hour affair, with an additional half hour added when the ceremony itself takes place at the venue, giving a couple room to move from vows through dinner without switching locations.
Beyond the main ballroom, the venue offers three separate cocktail spaces, the Garden Courtyard, a Lounge, and the Main Cocktail Room, so cocktail hour has its own dedicated footprint apart from the ballroom rather than sharing the same room reception will later fill. The Main Cocktail Room itself overlooks the Grand Ballroom from four balconies, letting guests look down into the space where dinner and dancing will happen before they head down into it.
Amenities
The Grand Ballroom includes a floor-to-ceiling mahogany bar with a top-shelf open bar, and catering is handled on-site as part of the booking, so a couple is not coordinating a separate outside caterer into the historic building. A private wedding suite gives the couple their own space to retreat to over the course of the day, separate from the ballroom and the three cocktail spaces.
Free valet parking is included, which matters for a venue in Northern Liberties where street parking can be tight on a weekend night. Between the Garden Courtyard, the Lounge, and the Main Cocktail Room, a couple has real choice in how cocktail hour is staged, whether that leans toward an outdoor courtyard feel or the balcony views of the Main Cocktail Room looking into the ballroom below.
Location & Getting There
Cescaphe Ballroom sits in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood, in the same building that has stood on the site since 1913, giving the venue a real address inside a historic stretch of the city rather than a converted space built to imitate one. Free valet parking removes one of the bigger friction points of a city venue, letting guests arrive without hunting for street parking nearby.
Inside, the room’s cathedral ceilings, hardwood floors, and hard architectural surfaces, chosen to preserve the original theater rather than soften it for events, mean sound carries and reflects the way it would in any large historic hall with high ceilings, so a DJ has to set up for a big, live room rather than one built with acoustic treatment in mind.
