The Space

Central Energy occupies a former central power plant built in 1981 to heat and cool the entire South Carolina State Hospital campus, using a system of underground pipes and an overhead trellis to carry steam and chilled water across the grounds. After the plant was decommissioned in 2005, it sat slated for demolition as part of the BullStreet District redevelopment until Downtown Church was gifted the building on December 6, 2017, and rebuilt it into an event venue.

Garvin Design Group and Hammer Construction handled the renovation, working to showcase the building’s original industrial character rather than hide it, and added three large glass doors and an indoor-outdoor stage to bring natural light into a structure that was never designed with windows in mind. The congregation held its first worship service inside in December 2018, and the venue held its public grand opening on March 7, 2019, after roughly $2 million in restoration work.

Capacity & Layout

Central Energy scales from intimate gatherings of 150 to 200 guests up through a seated banquet for 500, a cocktail-style reception for 600 to 700, and standing capacity above 900, all within 12,731 square feet of building and more than 8,000 square feet of flexible rental space. That range means the same venue can hold a small rehearsal dinner or a full wedding reception without a couple needing to guess whether the room will feel empty or overcrowded at their guest count.

The layout splits across a main hall with an indoor-outdoor stage, a 2,700 square foot courtyard reached through industrial bay doors that roll open to a green lawn, and multiple breakout rooms for smaller gatherings. Separate Bride and Groom rooms, each with a private bathroom, are included with the rental, so getting-ready space does not have to be arranged separately, and the standard rental already includes 100 Chiavari chairs, ten 60-inch round tables, ten cocktail tables, and rectangular tables.

Amenities

In-house catering comes from Loosh Culinaire and Central Table, managed by Crawford Pressley, so food is handled inside the same booking rather than through an outside vendor a couple has to source separately. The rental’s included furniture, 100 Chiavari chairs, round and cocktail tables, and rectangular tables, covers the basics of a reception without adding rental line items on top of the venue fee.

Bride and Groom rooms with private bathrooms give the wedding party dedicated space to get ready and to retreat to during the day, separate from the main hall and courtyard where guests gather. Rental rates for 2026 run from $3,100 to $6,000 depending on the day of the week and which configuration of the space a couple books, giving real flexibility for a weekday or off-season date against a Saturday in peak season.

Location & Getting There

Central Energy sits in Columbia’s BullStreet District, at the corner of Calhoun and Gregg Streets, close to downtown Columbia. Parking is available on-street and in an adjacent gravel lot, straightforward for a downtown venue that does not have a dedicated structured deck.

The building’s industrial bay doors roll open between the main hall and the 2,700 square foot courtyard, turning what was once a sealed power plant into a space that moves between indoor and outdoor easily, with the lawn beyond the courtyard extending the footprint further outside. That combination of hard industrial surfaces indoors and an open lawn outdoors means a DJ has to plan for two very different acoustics in the same event, a reflective, high-ceilinged main hall against an open-air courtyard and lawn where sound simply carries away rather than bouncing back.
