The Space

The Carolina Hotel opened January 1, 1901, as a four-story Colonial Revival structure and was the largest frame hotel in North Carolina at the time it was built. The construction began in 1898 to meet growing demand for accommodations after the Holly Inn proved inadequate. James Walker Tufts founded Pinehurst Resort in 1895 on 5,500 acres purchased in the Sandhills, and Frederick Law Olmsted’s landscape architecture firm designed both the village and the grounds surrounding the hotel. The hotel itself became the architectural and social centerpiece of the resort, known as the "Queen of the South." Its distinctive signature cupola, painted yellow with white trim originally, remains a visual landmark on the Pinehurst landscape.

Today the hotel retains 230 Four-Diamond guest rooms and suites, a significant reduction from the original 250 rooms with 49 suites, but maintaining the grandeur and formality the original guests experienced. The grounds surrounding the hotel took more than a year to prepare and remain bordered with trees, shrubbery, and flowers. The hotel was designated part of the Pinehurst National Historic Landmark District in 1996, the first golf resort and community to receive that honor.

Capacity & Layout

The Carolina Hotel provides twenty indoor and five outdoor meeting spaces, including the Grand Ballroom and numerous named meeting rooms. The total indoor meeting space totals 61,000 square feet, while outdoor function space spans 22,000 square feet. Multiple spaces can be combined for larger events or kept separate for intimate gatherings. The hotel’s historic significance and scale mean the spaces reflect tradition and established elegance rather than contemporary industrial design.

Guest accommodations are built in, allowing for multi-day celebrations where guests stay on-site. The layout encourages gathering and socializing throughout the hotel and grounds, not just in formal meeting spaces.

Amenities

The hotel includes fine dining through the Carolina Dining Room and Coffee House, as well as lounges including the Carolina Vista Lounge and Ryder Cup Lounge. Recreation includes a heated outdoor pool complex, a putting green on the West Lawn, a full health club, and spa services. Tennis courts and golf courses across the Pinehurst Resort grounds are accessible to hotel guests. Valet and on-site parking are available. Guest rooms feature complimentary WiFi and handicap accessible options.

The hotel’s 1901 original amenities included electric lights, steam heat, telephones in every guest room, elevators with velvet carpets, and modern conveniences that amazed visitors at the time. More than a century later, the property maintains high standards for comfort and service. The resort context means hotel staff can coordinate complex multi-day celebrations involving dining, activities, golf, and evening entertainment.

Location & Getting There

The Carolina Hotel sits in Pinehurst in Moore County in the North Carolina Sandhills, an area known for its golf courses, pines, and sandy terrain. Raleigh-Durham International Airport lies approximately 70 miles away. The Sandhills landscape, relatively flat, sandy soil, fragrant pine forests, creates a distinct regional character quite different from the mountains or piedmont. Pinehurst Village was designed with the hotel as its centerpiece, so the entire community orbits this one building and property.

The Grand Ballroom with its formal proportions, high ceilings, and traditional ballroom finishes, including decorative plaster, crown moldings, and hard surfaces, provides excellent acoustic properties for DJ work, with sound projecting evenly throughout the space and into any adjoining areas, making it one of the clearest and most acoustically straightforward ballroom spaces for sound reinforcement.
