The Space
Cairnwood is a 26,000-square-foot Beaux Arts mansion built between 1892 and 1895 for John Pitcairn Jr., the Scottish-born industrialist and Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company president. The mansion was designed by Carrere and Hastings, one of the country’s most prominent architectural firms of the Gilded Age, and the grounds were designed by the renowned landscape architecture firm Olmsted, Olmsted and Eliot. The estate has been recognized as a National Historic Landmark since 2008 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The first floor comprises six spacious rooms spanning 6,000 square feet: the Great Hall with its soaring two-story ceiling and massive carved stone fireplace, Living Room with a 30-foot oak dance floor, Library, Music Room with Louis XVI decor, Dining Room, and Billiard Room. A chapel sits in the third-story turret. The mansion hosted its first wedding reception in 1896, just a year after the Pitcairns moved in. Outside, the grounds feature the Side Garden with a reflecting pool, South Terrace for dining, fountain gardens, and manicured lawns overlooking the surrounding forest.
Capacity & Layout
Cairnwood is a reception-only venue. The estate accommodates up to 200 seated guests or 275 standing. The multiple rooms on the first floor allow couples to move guests through different spaces for cocktails, dinner, and dancing, or to host a single large celebration in the Great Hall and Living Room combined. The second floor provides private dressing suites for the bridal party. The estate hosts only one wedding per day, ensuring exclusive use of the property and grounds.
The grounds are wheelchair accessible with ramps at the main entrance. Wheelchairs do not fit the historic elevator, but accommodations can be arranged with advance notice. Trained staff support accessibility needs during your event.
Amenities
A preferred caterers list is provided by the estate. Full-service catering runs 130 to 150 dollars per person and includes staffing, cocktail hour, dinner, cake, rentals, and setup and teardown. BYOB is the bar policy, with preferred caterers providing bartenders, service, and setup. Ample complimentary parking is available. Three hours of pre-event access to the dressing suites are included. An on-site venue liaison manages coordination. Clear or white-top tents are available for outdoor events, and the South Terrace provides covered outdoor dining under the stars. Guests have access to the grounds for extended photography sessions.
Location & Getting There
Cairnwood is located at 1005 Cathedral Road in the Bryn Athyn Historic District, 16 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Bryn Athyn is in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, just minutes from Bucks County and the suburban communities surrounding the city. Philadelphia International Airport is approximately 16 miles away, making the venue accessible to destination guests. The location balances proximity to Philadelphia with a rural, forested setting that removes guests from urban surroundings.
The Great Hall’s soaring two-story ceiling and stone fireplace create natural sound projection and some reverberation that works well for ceremonies and toasts. The 30-foot oak dance floor in the Living Room is purpose-built for dancing and supports DJ equipment and sound systems effectively. The separate, adjoining rooms allow a DJ to serve multiple spaces or focus sound in a single area. Solid walls between rooms manage audio separation if cocktails and dancing occur simultaneously in different spaces.
