The Space
Before it was a wedding venue, this property was Yadkin Lodge, a winter hunting retreat built in the 1910s, and the manor that gives Boxwood Estate its name did not go up until 1933, designed by the architecture firm of Delano & Aldrich. William Rabb Craig and Margaret Cunningham Craig planted the English boxwoods around that same decade, and those gardens are what the estate is named for today, a detail that still shapes the grounds a couple walks through on the way to their ceremony.
The estate earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995, cited for its statewide significance in architecture, landscape architecture, and social history, a formal recognition that sets it apart from newer event properties built specifically for weddings. In 2001 the original 51 acres were split into nine separate parcels and sold off individually at auction, which put the estate’s future in question until the current owners bought the land and buildings back as a set and reunited them under one ownership.
Capacity & Layout
That reunification means the full 51 acres function as a single property again, and the estate now accommodates up to 350 guests across its combined indoor and outdoor event spaces. A ceremony lawn sits apart from the reception areas, giving a couple a dedicated outdoor spot for vows before guests move to the manor house and its surrounding grounds for the reception itself, rather than repurposing one space for both parts of the day.
At 350 guests, Boxwood Estate can hold a genuinely large wedding without feeling like it is exceeding its own capacity, since that ceiling reflects the combined footprint of the historic manor and its grounds rather than a single room. Couples working with smaller guest counts have room to be more flexible with layout, spreading tables across both the indoor spaces and the outdoor areas depending on season and the kind of evening they want.
Amenities
Get-ready suites are available on site for the wedding party, which keeps hair, makeup, and the getting-dressed portion of the day from requiring an off-site hotel room nearby. Parking is ample, with valet and shuttle service available for larger guest counts, and the property is wheelchair accessible throughout its historic buildings and grounds, worth confirming in advance given the estate’s age and original 1930s construction.
The estate also keeps 5 guest rooms and 1 suite on site, which lets part of the wedding party, or close family, actually stay overnight on the property rather than driving back to a hotel after the reception ends. For a couple planning a full wedding weekend rather than a single-day event, that on-site lodging turns Boxwood Estate into a home base for the getting-ready hours the next morning as well.
Location & Getting There
Boxwood Estate sits in Mocksville, roughly 38 miles from Piedmont Triad International Airport, a rural setting that puts distance between a wedding and the traffic of a larger city without making the drive unreasonable for guests flying in. The grounds themselves, still shaped by the Craig family’s original boxwood plantings, give the property a settled, decades-old look that a couple cannot get from a venue built in the last few years.
Between the historic manor’s original architecture and the open ceremony lawn outside, sound behaves differently depending on where a couple lands: the manor’s period rooms carry more natural reverberation off original plaster and hard surfaces, while the lawn setting calls for a DJ to plan for open-air dispersion rather than walls to hold the sound in.
