The Space

The main house at Bennett Bunn Plantation was built in 1833 in the Federal style, and it has stayed in place through nearly two centuries of use as a working farm. Cedar trees planted in the 1920s by Alac and Avon Bunn still line the driveway, and outbuildings dating from about 1780 to the 1830s cluster around a log cabin from around 1780. The property earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places in February 1986.

The Bunn family owned the farm for generations until 2000, when Grace Hutchins, Bennett Bunn’s great-granddaughter, sold it, and the house still carries marks from that long ownership. A burn scar on the floor dates to the Civil War, when a robber threw a torch through a front window, and a mantel clock given to the family by a Union soldier is still displayed inside. On one wall, the property carries a written memorial to Simon Bunn and Joni Piedelle, two people enslaved on the farm who died in the 1860s, and five enslaved people who worked the land are buried in a small cemetery on the grounds.

Capacity & Layout

Bennett Bunn Plantation is built to scale up or down: the venue lists a range from ten guests to a thousand, wide enough to cover an intimate ceremony in a gazebo or a full reception spread across the fields, ponds, and pastures. That range comes from having more than one usable space rather than one large room, so a smaller wedding can use a single site while a larger one spreads a ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception across separate parts of the 162 acres.

The Lodge, built of stone and timber, is the indoor reception space and is wheelchair accessible, which matters on a property where much of the ground is otherwise lawn, pasture, or farm road. Parking, the bridal suite, setup, and linens are all included in the site fee, which simplifies the planning math for a couple choosing between an indoor Lodge reception and an outdoor one under the trees or by the water.

Amenities

Because the property is an active farm, the amenity list includes things a built-for-weddings venue would not have: champion thoroughbred horses, hunter and jumper horses and ponies, miniature donkeys, Clydesdales, honey bee hives, chickens, guineas, peacocks, and black swans are all present on the grounds. For a couple who wants portraits or cocktail-hour wandering that looks like a working farm rather than a staged backdrop, that livestock is the amenity.

The Lodge itself, built of stone and cypress with exposed timbers, gives a couple a covered reception space with real architectural weight rather than a rented tent, and it comes with parking, a bridal suite, setup, and linens folded into the site fee. Gazebos and open fields nearby handle the ceremony side, so the property covers both halves of a wedding day without requiring an outside rental company for the structure itself.

Location & Getting There

The plantation sits on 162 acres of farmland and forest along US 264 in eastern Wake County, about 20 minutes from downtown Raleigh, close enough for city guests to drive out for the day without treating it as a destination trip. The setting is genuinely rural: pastures, ponds, and working farmland rather than a subdivision edge, so photographs taken anywhere on the property read as countryside.

With a ceremony held outdoors in a gazebo or field and a reception moved into The Lodge, a DJ’s setup typically splits across two different acoustic environments in the same afternoon: open pasture for vows, where sound has to project without walls to hold it, and the Lodge’s stone and timber interior for the reception, where the enclosed room gives music somewhere to gather instead of dispersing into open farmland.
