The Space
Madison was established by the North Carolina Legislature in 1815 and named for President James Madison, and the number in this venue’s name traces back to June 3, 1818, when town founder Randall Duke Scales auctioned off the original 96 half-acre lots for $67 to $100 each. The building itself once housed Busick’s Department Store during the town’s heyday, and it reopened as Bakery 1818 on February 9, 2018, after owners Krystle and Joe Destafino refurbished the space.
The Destafinos polished the building’s original hardwood floors and remodeled the upstairs into a multipurpose area furnished with Victorian pieces, meant for a bridal party to dress and relax before the day gets going. Downstairs, the main event room carries a giant ivy circle hung from the ceiling and finished with blush rose bouquets, and a separate bar area sits nearby with its own more elegant styling.
Capacity & Layout
Standing capacity tops out at 100, which puts this venue solidly in intimate-wedding territory rather than a room built for a few hundred guests. Inside the main event room, the ceremony aisle is marked by glass pillars holding votive candles, a detail already built into the space rather than something a couple has to bring in or design from scratch, and it keeps the room feeling finished even before any additional decor goes up.
Upstairs handles the bridal side of the day, with Victorian furnishings meant for getting ready and relaxing before the ceremony starts. Downstairs, the main room does double duty: it holds the ceremony first, then converts into a full dance floor for the reception, so the same space carries the day from vows to dancing without the wedding party moving between separate ceremony and reception rooms.
Amenities
Catering can be handled onsite or brought in from an outside caterer, so a couple is not locked into one kitchen’s menu. Alcohol service runs bring-your-own, which keeps bar costs in the couple’s control, and the downstairs bar area gives the room a dedicated spot for that part of the evening rather than folding it into the main floor.
The venue is wheelchair accessible, with accessible parking, restrooms, and seating built in, and parking itself is free, both practical points for a couple with older relatives or guests who need step-free access. Peak season runs April through May and September through November, so a couple targeting those windows should plan to book early.
Location & Getting There
The venue sits in downtown Madison, Rockingham County, part of the Greensboro-High Point metro area in the Piedmont Triad, a room where we have already worked a wedding. That puts it within a reasonable drive of the wider Triad for most guests without being in a major downtown of its own.
The building is a historic downtown structure, and its finishes, exposed brick, polished hardwood floors, and a single open main room, carry sound differently than a modern hotel ballroom does. Because the same room handles both ceremony and reception, we set levels for a quieter ceremony first, then bring the system up for dancing once the space transitions, rather than running one flat setup through the whole evening.
