The Space

This land was once part of the Grant estate, owned by Mrs. E. Stuart James Grant, the great-granddaughter of Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart, and every building on the property was built from field stone found on the grounds themselves. Eva Willis acquired the property at auction in 1997, taking on two stone rock barns along with a gardener’s house and roughly six acres, and opened the venue for business on August 1, 1998, running it with her family.

The larger barn, known as the Hayloft, holds 7,200 square feet and was renovated in 2012; the smaller barn, the Lodge, holds 3,400 square feet. Both barns keep their vaulted ceilings and hardwood floors, a look that comes straight from the original fieldstone construction rather than a themed build-out. A broader renovation across the property was completed in 2014, and a three-bedroom chalet sits on site as well.

Capacity & Layout

The Hayloft accommodates up to 250 seated guests, with standing room for as many as 400 across the property, which is enough room for a large wedding without needing a tent or an outside rental. Ceremony space sits on the ground floor with the reception set up above it, so a couple can move guests upstairs between the two parts of the day without leaving the building.

The Lodge, the smaller of the two barns, seats 100 to 150 guests and works both indoors and outdoors, with a reception hall on the ground floor and a loft area upstairs used for bridal preparation. That smaller barn also now serves as a bridal suite, with a full bath, Jacuzzi, and walk-in shower, so a couple choosing the more intimate room gets a dedicated space to get ready built right into it.

Amenities

A full kitchen sits on the property along with central heat and air and a propane furnace, so caterers have real equipment to work with and the barns stay comfortable regardless of the season. Onsite catering is available, and outside caterers are welcome as well, giving a couple more control over the menu. Alcohol is bring-your-own, which keeps bar costs in the couple’s hands rather than tied to a venue markup.

Parking is complimentary, and a three-bedroom chalet on the property gives part of the wedding party or family a place to stay overnight without leaving the grounds. One thing to plan around: the venue is not currently set up for wheelchair accessibility, so any guests who need step-free access should be factored into the planning early.

Location & Getting There

The property sits on land with real history behind it, once part of an estate connected to Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart’s family, now run as a rural event venue outside Axton, Virginia, one where we have already set up for a wedding. It is a countryside setting rather than a downtown one, so guests should plan for a drive rather than a walk from a hotel.

Sound behaves the way it does in most stone barns: vaulted ceilings and hardwood floors carry and reflect sound rather than absorbing it, so a full band or a loud system needs real attention to levels in either the Hayloft or the Lodge. Having two separate barns is an advantage here, since we can run a quieter ceremony setup in one building and a full reception system in the other without the two ever competing with each other.
