The Space

The mill on this site went up in 1900, and developer ARK Group, led by Rick and Noah Lazes, converted it into an entertainment complex that opened in 2006 as the NC Music Factory, built as the first stage of a wider district meant to combine entertainment, office, and residential space, modeled after New York’s SoHo. AvidXchange, a Charlotte financial software company, took over naming rights on March 1, 2016, renamed it AvidXchange Music Factory, and moved its own headquarters into the complex.

The complex covers 275,000 square feet and still carries original wood and brick from the 1900 mill through its buildings, a detail that shows up in several of the rooms rather than being scrubbed out in the renovation. More than ten separate spaces sit inside the district, from concert venues and nightclubs to comedy clubs and restaurants, all connected within walking distance of each other in uptown Charlotte, so a couple booking one room here is really booking into a larger neighborhood of venues.

Capacity & Layout

The Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre, the anchor of the complex, seats 5,000, split between 2,000 reserved seats and an open festival lawn. That combination gives a large event both a formal seated section and open lawn space for guests who want to move around, which is a different shape of room than most indoor reception halls offer, and it is worth sizing a guest list against realistically before locking in that room over a smaller one.

Beyond the amphitheatre, the complex holds distinct rooms including The Fillmore Charlotte, The Underground, Comedy Zone, World nightclub, VBGB Beer Hall, Foo Bar, ANTHM nightclub, Small Bar, and Bocao Sushi. That range means a couple can pick a room sized to the actual guest count, from an intimate bar space up through a full concert hall, rather than renting one fixed room built for a different number of people than the wedding actually has.

Amenities

The Fillmore Charlotte and the Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre are both run by Live Nation, so the production side of a large event, staging, house sound, and load-in, is handled by a team that runs concerts in that same room on other nights of the year, which means the crew on site already knows the quirks of that particular space.

Food and drink do not have to be brought in from outside: the complex has a beer hall, craft cocktail bars, and a sushi restaurant on site, along with additional bars scattered through the district, so a reception can lean on venues that are already part of the property instead of a separate catering setup, and guests can wander to a different bar for cocktail hour without leaving the complex.

Location & Getting There

The complex sits in uptown Charlotte, an easy landmark for guests coming from anywhere in the metro area or staying downtown for the weekend, and it is a room our team has already worked. Being part of a larger entertainment district also means guests have somewhere to go before or after the event itself, rather than a venue that empties into a parking lot once the night ends.

Sound behaves differently across the property: the Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre is an open-air space built for full concert sound, while rooms inside the original 1900 mill keep their exposed wood and brick, surfaces that carry sound differently than a modern drywall ballroom. We adjust setup room by room, running a fuller outdoor rig for the amphitheatre and a tighter, more contained system for the smaller indoor spaces with hard, historic surfaces.
