The Space

Avalon Yacht Club started in 1941 when members of the old Casino Club wanted a place to socialize and dance, and the borough sold them a plot at 7th Street and the Bay that had been the community dump. The club held its official dedication on May 30, 1942, in the middle of wartime gas rationing, with younger members walking to the ceremony and a hay wagon carrying the older ones who could not spare the fuel.

Today the ballroom carries more windows than walls, so the room stays lit by water and sky through the evening rather than by fixtures alone. The North Deck sits over the Intracoastal Waterway just south of Townsend’s Inlet, and a separate grill room gives the club a more casual, members-only feel apart from the formal event spaces. Together they give a couple both a big open room and a quieter water-facing deck.

Capacity & Layout

Seated capacity runs to 225, with standing room for up to 250, and that difference matters if a couple is weighing a seated dinner against a reception with more of a mingling, cocktail-hour feel. The North Deck handles ceremony and cocktail hour on the water, backed by an outdoor bar, and a retractable canopy with side screens means wind or a passing shower off the bay does not force a change of plans.

Weddings here run March through May and October through December, Saturdays and Sundays only, with June and September left open for the club’s own sailing calendar. The club itself is open ten months a year, closing only in January and February, so a couple planning a shoulder-season date has real options without competing against the busiest summer sailing weekends on the water.

Amenities

The in-house culinary team builds custom menus for each wedding, and the ballroom’s wraparound main bar means the bar line never has to compete with the buffet or dance floor for space. A dressing room is set aside for the wedding party, so getting ready does not mean shuttling between the club and a hotel room across town.

Parking is self-park with designated accessible spaces, the club itself is handicap accessible, and wireless internet is available for anyone who needs it during the event. A coordination team is on hand for planning help, and the club allows access to its docks and waterfront for photos, including sunset sessions timed to the water views the ballroom is built around.

Location & Getting There

The club sits directly on the Intracoastal Waterway just south of Townsend’s Inlet in Avalon, a straightforward drive for guests staying anywhere along that stretch of the Jersey Shore, and it is a room we have played before. Being on the water rather than tucked inland means the last light of the day shows up in photos taken from the deck.

For sound, the North Deck is an open-air setting with a retractable canopy and side screens rather than four solid walls, so a ceremony or cocktail-hour setup there has to account for wind coming off the bay and for sound carrying out over open water. The ballroom is the more contained room, and that is where we run the reception itself, since its walls and wraparound bar keep the music and the dance floor working as one enclosed space instead of fighting the breeze.
