The Space

In 1951, this 70-acre property opened as the Forsyth County Fairgrounds, built around a half-mile dirt track and set up to host the newly founded Carolina Classic Fair. In 1969 the Winston-Salem Foundation handed the grounds, along with Memorial Coliseum and $75,000, over to the city, and in 2014 the property was renamed to reflect a calendar that runs well past fair season. The Carolina Thunderbirds hockey team has called the arena home since 2017.

For a wedding, the property offers real choices in scale. The Neil Bolton Home & Garden Building, at 6,000 square feet, is sized for a social gathering or shower rather than a stadium crowd, while the 30,000-square-foot Event Center was built for trade shows and can absorb a much larger guest list with room to spare. We worked a booking here and can say the grounds handle a wedding crowd the way they handle everything else: easily.

Capacity & Layout

The numbers on this property run large because it was built for fairs, not for a single reception. The arena seats 4,000, the Event Center covers 30,000 square feet, and the Home & Garden Building adds another 6,000. That range matters for planning: a couple can choose a room close to their actual guest count instead of scaling a huge space down with drapery, or lean into the size if the guest list runs long.

More than 55,000 square feet of flexible event space sits across the property, and staff who run the Carolina Classic Fair and a farmers market every Saturday know how to move furniture, vendors and a couple hundred guests through a floor plan without it feeling improvised. Wheelchair access and on-site parking at multiple gates mean the layout question is less about whether people can get in and more about which building fits the day.

Amenities

Full concessions are available on-site, which is worth knowing if a family wants a food option beyond outside catering, and the grounds are wheelchair accessible throughout. Parking is spread across multiple gates rather than one lot, which keeps arrival simple even with 500,000 patrons passing through in a typical year. None of this is dressed up for weddings specifically, it is infrastructure built for crowds, and a wedding is a smaller version of what the place already does.

The Farmers Market building runs every Saturday from 6am to noon, so a Saturday wedding books into a property that is already active with vendors that morning, which is worth confirming with the Fairgrounds staff rather than assuming the grounds sit empty until the event. The buildings themselves span different build eras, from the 1989 arena to the 1997 Home & Garden Building, giving each room a slightly different feel despite sharing one property.

Location & Getting There

The fairgrounds sit on a 70-acre footprint in Winston-Salem, a scale that reads more like a small campus than a single hall, with the arena, Event Center and Home & Garden Building positioned as separate buildings on shared grounds. Guests coming from out of town will recognize the site by its long history as the home of the Carolina Classic Fair, which makes it an easy landmark to give directions to compared with a private property tucked off a back road.

On-site parking at multiple gates removes the usual worry about guests circling for a spot, and wheelchair access across the property means older relatives are not left navigating gravel or stairs. For sound, the scale that defines the grounds works in a DJ’s favor: the 30,000-square-foot Event Center and the 4,000-seat arena, both built to hold trade-show crowds and hockey games, give plenty of open air for a full PA system to fill without bouncing back off close walls.
