The Space

Walnut Hill sits on 20 acres that trace back to the Mial and Williamson families, who farmed this land for more than 200 years and at one point held some 2,700 acres of it. Between 1940 and 1952, the North Carolina State Experiment Station ran a research station here studying tobacco soil conservation, and the property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 2000.

The white barn that anchors the reception space has a sliding barn door wall that opens the room to the outside, full heating and air conditioning, and oversized windows looking out over the surrounding gardens. Nine original historic outbuildings remain on the property, and the Estate House, built in 1990, sits alongside them as the newer of the property’s structures.

Capacity & Layout

The white barn seats up to 200 guests for a seated dinner, with standing capacity reaching 250, which sets the ceiling for a reception held inside. Ceremony sites are separate from the barn: a couple can choose the Lakeside Gardens, the Pavilion Gardens, or the Open Air Chapel overlooking the pond, each of which puts the ceremony in a different part of the 20 acre property.

That separation between ceremony and reception spaces means a wedding day here typically moves guests across the property rather than staying in one room for the whole event. The barn’s sliding door wall lets the reception open up to the outside when weather allows, effectively extending the indoor floor plan into the gardens just outside without requiring a full outdoor setup.

Amenities

Two separate houses handle getting ready: the Estate House has a large room with a full hair and makeup counter plus a separate bridal suite, while Hill House, the second getting ready residence, has a full kitchen, living room, private back porch, a game room with foosball and air hockey, and three guest rooms. That gives two wedding parties, or one large one, real separate space to prepare.

Having both houses available means the property can host a couple who each want their own space to get ready in, without one side crowding into a shared room. The nine historic outbuildings scattered around the grounds also give a couple more backdrop options for portraits than a single barn and lawn would provide on their own.

Location & Getting There

Walnut Hill is about 20 minutes from downtown Raleigh, set on 20 acres that keep the barn and gardens removed from city traffic while still leaving it a short drive for guests staying downtown. As of spring 2025 the property closed to public events and is now a private family estate, so this page reflects the venue as it operated through that point rather than as a current booking option.

We worked a wedding in the white barn while it was open to the public, where the sliding barn door wall meant sound had to account for the room shifting between fully enclosed and partly open to the gardens outside; the heating and air conditioning kept that open wall from being a weather compromise, but a DJ system there still had to be set for a room that could change shape mid event.
