The Space
This Queen Anne mansion outside Monroe went up in 1884, and it still shows in the asymmetrical roofline, wrap-around porch, and the heavy moldings and detailed millwork inside. Cofield and Shirley Hilburn bought the house in 1995 and turned it into an events venue they named the Victorian Crow’s Nest, and it has since passed to new owners, Ingram and Ann Walters, who now run it as The Grande Victorian.
The house carries a Local Historic Landmark designation and totals about 12,000 square feet of interior space, spread across a building constructed for a family rather than for weddings and events. That layered history is the real draw here: a couple booking this venue is choosing an actual 19th-century home with its original architectural details intact, set on 6 private acres, over a room designed from scratch to host events.
Capacity & Layout
The main ballroom inside the house measures 5,000 square feet and seats 200, which is the number a couple should plan their guest list and floor plan around if the reception is happening indoors. That is a genuinely large room for a historic house venue, big enough for a full dance floor, a band or DJ setup, and round-table seating for the whole group without feeling cramped or overcrowded.
Ceremonies typically move outdoors to the property’s covered pavilion, a 3,000-square-foot structure set in manicured gardens, which gives a couple a separate, weather-protected space for vows before the crowd shifts into the ballroom for the reception. Splitting ceremony and reception across two distinct spaces on one property is a real logistical advantage: no long guest drive between locations, but still two genuinely different settings for photos.
Amenities
The bride and groom get separate suites for getting ready, which matters on a property this size since the ballroom, pavilion and gardens are all in active use for vendor setup on the wedding day itself. An on-site industrial kitchen supports catering directly from the house, so a caterer can work from a real kitchen instead of hauling in a full mobile setup for the day.
Outside, the manicured gardens surrounding the pavilion double as photo backdrops and casual gathering space between the ceremony and the reception, and the property’s Queen Anne details, the wrap-around porch, the millwork, the heavy interior moldings, give a couple built-in backdrops for portraits without needing to bring in separate decor. It reads as a working historic estate, not a blank rented event box.
Location & Getting There
The mansion sits on 6 acres just outside Monroe, North Carolina, close enough for Charlotte-area guests to reach without booking a hotel room but removed enough to feel like a private estate once you turn onto the property. We have worked one wedding here, so we know the flow between the pavilion, the gardens and the ballroom firsthand rather than from photos alone.
That two-space layout matters for sound. The covered pavilion is open-air with a hard roof but no walls, so a DJ working the ceremony there is dealing with outdoor acoustics and needs weather-appropriate gear, while the 5,000-square-foot ballroom is a fully enclosed room where a system can be set once and left to carry cleanly through dinner, toasts and dancing without adjustment.
