The Space
The Apple Barn began its life in 1911 as a dairy barn, built with one of the first concrete floors used for dairy operations in the area, and for a stretch of years it also housed a cheese factory. That working agricultural history is part of what a couple is booking here, not a building designed from the start to host weddings but a barn repurposed for them. It now sits inside the Valle Crucis Conference Center, a 470-acre Episcopal mission property in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Banner Elk.
The mission itself dates further back, established by the Episcopal Church in 1844 and 1845, and the wider property carries that same age throughout, including the Church of the Holy Cross, built around 1924 in Gothic Revival style, and the National Register listing the district received in 1993. A couple marrying in the Apple Barn is marrying inside a working piece of that longer mission history.
Capacity & Layout
The barn is fire-rated for 271 people, though seating at tables for a dinner brings that number down to about 120, the figure a couple should plan a guest list around rather than the fire code maximum. We have worked a wedding in this room, and its barn shape reads exactly as its history suggests: open, wood-framed, and built for gathering rather than for the tight sightlines of a purpose-built ballroom.
Beyond the barn itself, the wider conference center offers other rooms if a couple needs more space across a weekend: Crab Orchard Hall seats up to 80 theater-style across its two rooms, and Johnson Hall, dedicated in 2004 and named for former bishop Robert H. Johnson, has two floors with a separate large meeting area on each, useful for a rehearsal dinner or a next-day brunch away from the barn.
Amenities
The Apple Barn comes equipped with round and rectangular tables and chairs, A/V and sound equipment, restrooms, and a hospitality kitchen, which covers most of what a couple needs without renting in extra equipment. On-site catering is available through the conference center as well, simplifying a piece of planning that at other venues would mean coordinating an outside vendor.
Because this is a full conference center property, the amenities extend well past the barn: 39 guest rooms on site let out-of-town guests stay without a separate hotel booking, an outdoor pool and airport shuttle are both available, and the whole property is wheelchair accessible, which matters given the barn sits on 470 acres of mountain and valley terrain.
Location & Getting There
The property sits in a rural valley in western North Carolina near Banner Elk, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and its 470 acres mean guests are arriving to mountain scenery rather than a parking lot backdrop. The remote setting is part of the draw for couples choosing a destination-style mountain wedding.
Inside, the barn’s wood-framed structure and open barn shape behave the way you would expect from a converted dairy barn: hard wood surfaces with real ceiling height overhead, so sound carries well through the open room, and the built-in A/V and sound equipment gives a DJ a real head start rather than building a system from nothing.
