The Space

At the corner of Lincoln and Senate Streets, in the middle of Columbia’s Vista district, the Pastides Alumni Center anchors a stretch of the city that mixes restaurants, galleries and foot traffic. The building opened in 2015 with close to 30,000 square feet under one roof, and it serves as home base for the University of South Carolina Alumni Association, an organization that traces back to 1920. That history gives the building a sense of permanence a newer event space would not have.

The centerpiece is the Eliatamby Family Grand Ballroom, a 10,000 square foot room that can be closed off with partitions into four smaller sections when a full-size reception is not what a couple wants. A second option, the Robert V. Royall Presidential Dining Room, comes with its own pre-reception lounge and a scale suited to a more intimate guest list. Between the two rooms, six conference rooms and a smaller dining area round out the building for rehearsal dinners or day-after brunches.

Capacity & Layout

The Grand Ballroom is rated for 550 guests seated and 900 for a reception-style crowd, numbers that put it in range for the larger Columbia weddings that want everyone under one roof rather than split across a ceremony site and a separate reception hall. We have worked a reception in this room, and the floor plan gives a DJ booth, dance floor and full seated dinner room space to breathe without feeling like three functions crammed into one.

For couples with a guest list closer to 80 or 115 people, the Presidential Dining Room is the better fit, and because the ballroom itself divides into four sections, a mid-size wedding of 150 or 200 does not have to rattle around in a room built for triple that number. That flexibility is the real value here: the same building can host a wedding of 90 or 900 without the room ever feeling like the wrong size.

Amenities

Southern Way Catering holds the exclusive catering contract for the building, so menu and bar service run through them rather than an outside caterer a couple might bring in. Outdoors, a private gated patio and an open-air terrace give guests a place to step out during cocktail hour, and both look out over the city rather than a parking lot, which matters for photos taken between the ceremony and the reception.

The six conference rooms scattered through the building are available for a bridal party to use as a staging area, and the smaller dining area works for a rehearsal dinner the night before without needing to book a second venue across town. Wheelchair access is confirmed throughout, which matters for guests using the terrace and patio as well as the ballroom itself.

Location & Getting There

Being in the Vista means the venue sits inside Columbia’s dedicated arts and entertainment district, an easy walk from restaurants and hotels for out-of-town guests who do not want to drive after the reception ends. That location also puts the building close to the USC campus itself, which past students and alumni often mention when they choose the space for a wedding.

Because the Grand Ballroom can be divided with partitions into four sections, sound behaves differently depending on how much of the room is opened up for the event: a full 10,000 square foot ballroom carries and needs a system built for scale, while a partitioned section holds sound closer and tighter, so we plan speaker placement around whichever configuration the couple has booked.
