The Space

Ben Roberts, a trained chef, opened Undercurrent in May 1998 on South Elm Street, taking over a struggling restaurant during downtown Greensboro’s early revival, then moved the business to its current Battleground Avenue address in 2006, doubling its size in the process and adding a bar, a larger kitchen and dedicated private dining space. Wes and Chris Wheeler, both longtime employees, became sole owners in January 2020, keeping the restaurant’s operation in the hands of people who had already worked the room for years.

The move to Battleground Avenue took the restaurant from a 50-seat space to one with 78 seats, and today the building holds the Wagner Room, named for longtime downtown Greensboro resident Jack Wagner, the main dining room, an elegant bar, and a private patio, four distinct spaces under one roof. The kitchen serves contemporary American cuisine built on classical French technique, the same kitchen recognized by USA Today as a top-ten Greensboro restaurant and by Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast for a wine list running 150 bottles deep with more than 50 by the glass.

Capacity & Layout

The Wagner Room seats 30 for a plated dinner or 50 for a cocktail-style gathering, making it a natural fit for a rehearsal dinner or a smaller wedding, while the main dining room holds 80 seated or 100 standing for a larger reception. The elegant bar area seats 30 on its own, and a private patio is available as an additional rental, giving a couple room to spread a wedding across several connected spaces rather than a single fixed room.

Because the Wagner Room and main dining room can be booked separately or together, a couple can scale the event to the guest list, using the smaller room alone for an intimate dinner or combining spaces for a larger reception that still keeps a bar area and patio available for guests who want to step outside. That range, from 30 seated up to 100 standing, covers most wedding sizes without requiring a couple to rent a room built for a crowd twice as large as their own.

Amenities

In-house catering runs on customizable seasonal menus, and the Wagner Room comes equipped with a 60-inch monitor with wireless hookup, two wireless microphones, a 40-watt PA system, a Blu-ray player and an MP3 jack, meaning a basic sound and presentation setup is already built into the room before a DJ even arrives. A $3-per-slice cake-cutting fee applies for an outside cake, and bringing in outside wine carries a $25 corkage fee per bottle, both worth building into the budget ahead of time.

The restaurant is wheelchair accessible and offers WiFi throughout, and the full bar pours craft beer alongside that deep wine list, so a hosted bar here is backed by a genuinely serious drinks program. Parking is ample both on-street and in nearby lots, which keeps arrival simple for a wedding that does not want guests circling the block.

Location & Getting There

Undercurrent sits on Battleground Avenue on the north end of downtown Greensboro, a location the restaurant has held since 2006, giving it a settled, established presence in the neighborhood rather than a newly opened space. The restaurant’s regular hours, lunch Tuesday through Friday, dinner Tuesday through Saturday, and Sunday brunch, closed Mondays, mean an event booking here is layered into a business that runs a full schedule the rest of the week.

With the Wagner Room and main dining room both enclosed, hard-walled indoor spaces already wired with a house PA system and wireless microphones, a DJ setting up here is working in a room built to carry amplified sound cleanly through dinner and into dancing, while the private patio offers a quieter, open-air option for guests who want a break from the music indoors.
