The Space
The garden traces back to 1903, when UNC’s first botany professor, William Chambers Coker, planted a teaching collection on campus that grew into the Coker Arboretum, and it expanded seriously in 1952 when the university dedicated 70 acres for a botanical garden, followed by horticulturist William Lanier Hunt’s donation of 103 more acres along the rhododendron bluffs of Morgan Creek. It opened to the public on Arbor Day in 1966 under its first director, C. Ritchie Bell, and today stewards more than 1,200 acres of gardens, natural areas and preserves.
Event space centers on the James & Delight Allen Education Center, completed in 2009 as the first LEED Platinum certified state-owned building or public museum in North Carolina, with Reeves Auditorium inside it available for indoor gatherings. The garden itself holds 14 collections and roughly 2,500 of the 4,700 plant species native or naturalized to the Carolinas, along with the Paul Green Cabin, the historic home of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Chapel Hill author, tucked into the grounds.
Capacity & Layout
Ceremony sites include the display gardens themselves, the Koch Memorial Forest Theatre, Coker Arboretum on the UNC campus, or a covered breezeway for weather protection, giving a couple a genuine choice between several distinct outdoor settings rather than one fixed garden backdrop. Reception can move indoors to Reeves Auditorium inside the Education Center or stay outdoors across the garden’s sections and patios, and covered porches and breezeways bridge the two if the forecast is uncertain.
With 1,200 acres under the garden’s care, the display areas used for weddings are a curated slice of a much larger property, meaning a couple’s ceremony and photos happen inside intentionally designed plant collections rather than open lawn. That scale also means the garden can accommodate distinct zones for ceremony, cocktail hour and reception without those groups of guests feeling like they are competing for the same patch of ground.
Amenities
Admission to the garden itself is free for general visitors, though event rental rates vary by purpose, day and space, and the grounds are built with accessibility in mind: most paths meet ADA standards for a garden setting, all-terrain wheelchairs are available to borrow at no cost, and gender-neutral accessible restrooms are on site. Free parking is available in the main lot, though gates lock at 5pm, a detail worth confirming directly with the garden when planning an evening event.
The garden has received the American Horticultural Society’s Garden Stewardship Award and is recognized as an LGBTQ+ friendly wedding venue, reflecting an institution used to hosting weddings rather than one adapting an unrelated space for the purpose. Because the venue operates as a university garden, service animals are welcome and hearing-forward accessibility is built into the visitor experience rather than added on for events.
Location & Getting There
The garden sits in Chapel Hill on UNC’s campus, close enough to campus life that guests unfamiliar with the area will find restaurants and lodging nearby without much searching. Regular garden hours run Tuesday through Sunday, 9am to 5pm, closed Mondays and university holidays, so an event outside those hours should be confirmed with the garden directly as part of booking.
Ceremony sites like the Forest Theatre and the arboretum are entirely outdoors and open to the sky, which suits acoustic or lightly amplified music better than a full sound system, while the indoor Reeves Auditorium inside the Education Center gives a DJ an enclosed, weatherproof room with real walls for a reception that needs fuller sound through dinner and dancing.
