The Space
The Umstead Hotel and Spa opened on January 15, 2007, built by Jim and Ann Goodnight, founders of SAS Institute, who set out to create a world-class hotel for SAS’s international visitors and Triangle business executives after luxury chains passed on the concept. Designed by Boston architect Frank Nicholson, whose earlier work includes The Breakers in Palm Beach, the hotel sits on 12 acres of woodlands overlooking a private three-acre lake, right next to William B. Umstead State Park.
The property holds 150 luxury guest rooms and suites, many with lake views and private balconies, along with Herons, a restaurant that holds one of only 64 Forbes Five-Star ratings in the world, and a 16,000 square foot spa with its own Forbes four-star rating. It is the only Forbes Five-Star hotel in North Carolina and one of just three AAA Five-Diamond hotels in the state, a level of polish that shows in every part of the property a wedding might touch.
Capacity & Layout
Ten thousand square feet of event space is split across eight distinct areas, anchored by a 4,000 square foot ballroom with 20-foot ceilings that seats up to 200 guests, custom carpeting, and 4k technology built into an enhanced audio-visual system. Smaller spaces, including a boardroom for up to 16 and additional salon and meeting rooms, give a couple room to schedule a rehearsal dinner, a brunch, or a smaller family gathering without leaving the property.
Outdoors, the wedding lawn uses wide stone pavers to form an aisle-like path down to the private lake, framed by woodlands and a dramatic fountain, a ceremony setting that does not require any additional draping or structure to feel finished. Between the ballroom, the terrace overlooking the lake, and the lawn itself, a couple can stage ceremony, cocktail hour and reception in three connected but visually distinct settings without shuttling guests off the property.
Amenities
Herons handles catering, and its kitchen sources roughly 70 percent of its produce from One Oak Farm, a three-acre sustainable farm the hotel owns less than a mile away, so a wedding dinner here comes from a kitchen that has earned a James Beard Award semifinalist nomination for its executive chef and a Michelin Recommended listing in its own right. A wine cellar holding 2,500 bottles backs the bar and lounge program, giving a couple’s bar service real depth if they want to lean into it.
With 150 guest rooms on site, out-of-town guests can stay where the wedding happens rather than driving in from a hotel down the road, and valet parking is required for events over 100 guests, worth building into the day’s logistics. The 16,000 square foot spa, with massage, facials, saunas, steam rooms and an outdoor meditation courtyard, gives a wedding party a place to unwind the morning of or the day after.
Location & Getting There
The hotel sits in Cary, about 10 miles from Raleigh and just five to six minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, making it genuinely easy for out-of-town guests to fly in and reach the property with minimal transit time. Its position beside William B. Umstead State Park means the 12 acres of woodlands around the hotel feel more remote than a Cary address might suggest.
The ballroom’s 20-foot ceilings and built-in 4k audio-visual system give a DJ a room engineered for sound from the start, while the terrace and wedding lawn offer an open-air alternative framed by woods and the lake, so whether the reception stays indoors under those high ceilings or moves outside along the stone-paved lawn, the space has already been designed with performance and amplified sound in mind.
