The Space
Truist Stadium opened in 2010 as home to the Winston-Salem Dash, the White Sox High-A affiliate in the South Atlantic League, replacing Ernie Shore Field, which had served as the city’s ballpark from 1956 to 2009. Getting the new park built meant clearing the site first, more than 40 existing structures were demolished to make room for the 50,000-square-foot ballpark before construction even began, so the stadium sits on ground the club deliberately assembled for this purpose.
We have worked this room for weddings before, and one detail that stands out on site is the grading: the stadium is built into a gently sloping hill just off US Highway 421, with the playing surface sitting well below street level. That means the field feels tucked into a bowl, shielded somewhat from the surrounding road noise, with downtown Winston-Salem visible past the outfield wall as a natural skyline backdrop for a ceremony held on the field.
Capacity & Layout
The stadium seats 5,500 in stadium-style seats, a scale that comfortably handles a large wedding without approaching the park’s real capacity, plus 16 luxury suites on the Club Level for smaller, separated gatherings such as a wedding party or immediate family. That suite tier is worth considering for a rehearsal dinner or a VIP block within a larger wedding, since it sits apart from the main seating bowl.
A 3,500-square-foot Founders Club adds an enclosed reception-style space distinct from the open seating bowl, useful when a couple wants an indoor or semi-indoor fallback rather than relying entirely on open-air field and stands. Between the seating bowl, the suites, and the Founders Club, the park offers three genuinely different layouts to choose from rather than a single fixed floor plan, which matters when deciding where the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception each happen.
Amenities
The stadium was named Ballpark of the Year by Baseballparks.com at the end of its first season in 2010, a sign the facility was well regarded from the start rather than simply new. BB&T signed on for naming rights in a 15-year deal in February 2010, and the park took its current name, Truist Stadium, in June 2020 following the BB&T and SunTrust merger, so the branding on site reflects that history if guests notice the signage.
The Founders Club and the Club Level suites both function as amenity spaces beyond bare seating, giving caterers and bar service a defined indoor footprint to work from rather than setting up entirely in the open. For a wedding, that combination of enclosed club space plus open stadium seating gives vendors more than one option for staging food, drink, and gear depending on weather and guest flow.
Location & Getting There
Truist Stadium sits just off US Highway 421 in Winston-Salem, built into the slope of a hill so the site reads as tucked into the landscape rather than perched flat and exposed. That hillside setting also shapes arrival: guests walk down toward the field level rather than up, with downtown Winston-Salem visible beyond the outfield the whole way.
The open seating bowl and the lower-than-street-level field mean sound from a DJ setup on the field or in the stands travels outward with little to bounce off and amplify unpredictably, unlike an enclosed hall, so a system built for genuine outdoor coverage, not just indoor volume, works better here than a compact setup meant for a smaller enclosed room.
