The Space
Transfer Co. Food Hall started life in the 1920s as the garage and shop for Carolina Coach Company, a regional bus operator that by the 1940s had grown into the largest of its kind in the country, running under the Trailways name. That working history is still legible in the building: a full renovation completed in 2018 kept the shell’s industrial bones intact rather than stripping them out, so the floor-to-ceiling exposed brick a couple sees on a tour is the same brick that once framed a bus garage.
The food hall opened in 2019 across more than 50,000 square feet of renovated warehouse and newly built space, and it functions as several venues under one roof rather than a single hall: a working food hall with multiple vendors, a ballroom, a loft, and a courtyard, each bookable on its own or combined for a larger footprint. For a couple planning a reception, that means the choice of room shapes the whole event, from an intimate loft gathering to a full-building buyout.
Capacity & Layout
The ballroom runs 4,160 square feet, the loft 3,600 square feet, and the courtyard 700 square feet, giving a couple three distinct footprints depending on guest count and whether the day leans indoor or outdoor. Seated capacity across the venue tops out at 496, enough room for a full-scale wedding with space to spare, and it gives real flexibility in how tables, a dance floor, and a DJ setup get arranged.
Because the space splits into a ballroom, loft, and courtyard rather than one fixed room, a couple can size the booking to the event: a smaller wedding might take the loft alone, while a larger one can spread across the ballroom and courtyard with the food hall itself available for cocktail hour. That range in square footage, from the 700-square-foot courtyard up to the 4,160-square-foot ballroom, is worth walking through with the venue directly when deciding where the ceremony, dinner, and dancing each happen.
Amenities
Catering here works differently than at most reception venues: instead of a single in-house kitchen, couples pick and choose from the food hall’s own vendors, with service and bar staff provided as part of the booking, so the food stalls become the wedding’s actual catering rather than an outside company brought in separately. A full ABC permit covers the entire food hall and courtyard, with exceptions carved out for two of the smaller suites, so the bar can run across most of the footprint a couple would use for a reception.
Free parking is available on site, which matters for a downtown Raleigh venue where guests might otherwise be hunting for a garage through the reception. The building’s exposed brick walls run floor to ceiling throughout, giving the space a consistent look whether a couple is standing in the ballroom, the loft, or the food hall proper, so decor decisions can lean into that material rather than working around it.
Location & Getting There
Transfer Co. sits in downtown Raleigh’s Moore Square Arts District, a five-minute walk from Fayetteville Street, inside the same walkable core as much of downtown’s hotel and nightlife stock. For out-of-town guests staying downtown, that short walk means the venue does not require a shuttle to feel connected to the rest of the city, and for a couple hosting a mixed local-and-traveling guest list, it keeps logistics simple.
We have worked a wedding in this room before, and the mix of hard surfaces, exposed brick and warehouse ceilings, against separate bookable spaces means sound behaves differently from section to section: the loft and ballroom hold a DJ system’s volume in more than the open courtyard does, so where the reception and dancing land is worth deciding early, since it changes how a sound setup gets dialed in for the room.
