The Space
George Pendleton White built this house in 1838, a tailor and farmer who also helped route the railroad that contributed to Rock Hill’s founding, and after his death in 1849 his widow Ann Hutchison White expanded the home and added the Victorian details that earned it the nickname the Gingerbread Palace. What began as a one-room cottage grew into an eighteen-room, two-story house over more than 160 years, with five generations of the White family living there before Historic Rock Hill purchased the property in 2005.
Historic Rock Hill spent five years restoring the house before opening it to the public in 2010, and it now operates the property as an event venue alongside a small museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1969. The original cabin still standing on the grounds is the oldest wooden structure in Rock Hill, and the Elizabeth Lane Garden, designed by landscape designer Jenks Farmer, was added as a modern southern garden with color through the year.
Capacity & Layout
Indoors, the house seats about 150 guests and holds up to 200 standing, and the main level is where receptions, catering displays and cocktail hours take place. Five private suites throughout the house serve bridal parties and other events, which lets a wedding party get ready on site rather than arriving already dressed, and three bathrooms on the ground floor keep guests from having to search the house during the reception.
Outdoors, the property allows for a much bigger day: total capacity across the grounds reaches 500 guests, using the private courtyard, the ceremony lawn, the brick patio for dancing, and the surrounding gardens, with a white frame tent available for coverage. That gap between the 150 to 200 seated indoors and the 500 total on the property means a couple with a large guest list should plan the day around the lawn and patio rather than the house interior alone.
Amenities
The house itself is the amenity here, an eighteen-room Victorian home with period architecture that most rented halls cannot offer, and the cabin on the grounds, the oldest wooden structure in Rock Hill, adds a second historic building to the property beyond the main house. Parking sits on a private gravel lot behind the home, with street parking and the Elizabeth Lane parking garage available for larger events that outgrow the lot.
Ann Hutchison White’s legacy runs through the property as well: she donated the land that became Pine Grove Academy, Rock Hill’s first school, in 1854, and is remembered locally for that kind of civic contribution. That history is part of what a couple is renting when they book here, a house that shaped the town around it rather than one built for events from the start.
Location & Getting There
The White Home sits in the Reid Street-North Confederate Avenue Area Historic District of downtown Rock Hill, on just over three acres of gardens and lawn, close enough to Charlotte, about 30 minutes away, that out of town guests have an easy drive in.
Given the mix of indoor rooms with period woodwork and hard floors and the outdoor brick patio and lawn used for dancing, a DJ working here needs to plan differently depending on whether the reception stays inside the historic house, where sound stays contained by the original walls, or moves out to the brick patio and lawn, where an open-air setup needs its own power and coverage across the yard.
