The Space
Built in 1923, this building spent over four decades as a school, with six classrooms for kindergarten through eighth grade on the ground floor and a spacious second floor used for recess, assemblies, and even roller skating. It closed in 1964 and sat empty until 2013, when Bill Stephens and his wife bought the property and brought back its original vintage character before it changed hands again.
Erin and Sean Eads found the school house in February 2019 and spent the next year renovating it into a wedding and event venue, finishing the work at 4am on July 25, 2020, the same day they were married on the building’s original 1923 stage. That timeline means the venue’s current owners tested the space themselves before ever hosting another couple’s wedding in it.
Capacity & Layout
Maximum occupancy is 300 people including vendors, and the two-story layout gives a couple three site location choices for both ceremony and reception, upstairs, downstairs, or a combination, rather than one fixed room. That range in site choice matters for how a wedding day is paced: a couple can use one floor for the ceremony and move the whole party to the other for dinner and dancing.
Furniture is built into the rental: 150 antique mix-matched wooden chairs and two pews for upstairs use, 150 x-back wooden chairs downstairs, and fifteen farmhouse tables throughout. That level of included seating means a couple is not separately renting chairs and tables on top of the venue fee, which simplifies budgeting significantly for a wedding sized anywhere close to the 300-person maximum.
Amenities
Rental hours run 9am to 11pm, 14 hours of exclusive access, long enough that setup does not compete with a wedding party getting ready elsewhere. Private bridal and groom’s suites are on site for that purpose, with the bridal suite offering ample natural and vanity lighting and the groom’s suite designed to be gender-neutral, so both sides of the wedding party have dedicated space rather than sharing one room.
The venue has an exclusive partnership with Southern Way Catering, alongside a preferred vendor list, and both live bands and DJs are welcome for ceremonies and receptions. A 2-hour rehearsal walk-through is included, scheduled 30 days before the wedding, and a dedicated day-of coordinator and day-of manager come with the rental, along with sparkler and fireworks send-off services available for an additional fee.
Location & Getting There
The School House Venue sits in Travelers Rest, South Carolina, with on-site parking for up to 100 vehicles and handicapped parking included, so guests are not searching for street parking near a converted school building. An outdoor porch with string lights and ceiling fans gives the property a covered outdoor space that bridges the gap between the building’s interior and its grounds.
