The Space
Before it was an event space, this building on the west side of Charlotte was the Charlotte Merchandise Mart, opened in 1962 and run by the D.L. Phillips Company for decades. The Park Church bought the property in 2006 and kept it running as a public exposition and conference center, one of the few churches in the country funding ministry work through commercial event space. That history shows in the building’s scale: it was built to move trade show traffic, not to charm.
The result is three connected halls under one roof, Liberty, Independence, and Freedom, plus a 300-seat cafe on the concourse and flexible meeting rooms. At 529,000 square feet across the complex, with 224,000 square feet of open exhibition floor and 15,000 square feet of dedicated meeting space, a couple touring the halls is choosing between an intimate corner of a big room and the full run of it.
Capacity & Layout
Each hall scales differently. Liberty Hall is the largest at 104,000 square feet, seating up to 4,500 and holding 6,000 for a standing reception. Independence Hall seats 2,600 and receives 3,000 standing, and Freedom Hall, the smallest at 40,000 square feet, still seats 1,800 and holds 2,500 standing. For a wedding, that range means the room can be sectioned down with pipe and drape rather than swallowing a modest guest list whole.
The venue’s total seated capacity across all three halls is listed at 16,000, a figure that speaks to its trade-show identity more than to any single wedding. Most couples booking here work with event planners to carve a section of Freedom or Independence Hall into a reception footprint, choosing dance floor placement, head table position, and DJ setup location the way they would in a rented ballroom rather than a fixed one.
Amenities
The 300-seat cafe on the concourse gives caterers and vendors a staging area separate from the hall itself, and the venue’s 320,000 square feet of permanent office space supports the kind of on-site coordination a large conference-style booking needs. Over 2,500 parking spaces and 31 partial-hookup RV camping spots mean guests driving in from out of town, or a wedding party arriving early to set up, are never fighting for a spot.
Catering runs through the Park Cafe on site, which simplifies logistics for a couple who would rather not coordinate an outside kitchen crew hauling equipment through a trade-show-scale building. Because the halls are built for exhibitors and conventions rather than for one wedding at a time, extras like linens, staging, or audiovisual support are arranged directly with the venue rather than assumed as part of a standard package.
Location & Getting There
The Park Expo sits less than five miles from Uptown Charlotte, close enough that out-of-town guests can stay downtown and still have an easy drive to the venue. It is the second-largest event space in Charlotte, which means it comes up often in comparison with the city’s convention center, but its location outside the downtown core keeps parking simple and traffic lighter on a wedding day.
We have worked in this room before, and the practical note for a couple planning here is that exhibition halls this size are acoustically forgiving in some ways and demanding in others: high ceilings and hard concrete floors carry sound a long way, so we set up close to the reception footprint rather than at the edge of the hall, and we run a focused PA aimed at the seated tables instead of trying to fill the entire room.
