The Space
The Loading Dock started life as a 1960s warehouse on South White Street, built on the site of a former paper company, and it still shows: the 24,000 square foot building kept its original rafters and concrete floors through the renovation instead of covering them over. What was converted is now a working coworking space with 48 private offices, seven conference rooms, two training rooms, a restaurant space, and a large event area, so a wedding here shares a building with an active business community rather than a venue built purely for events.
That mixed identity is part of what makes the space distinctive: the event area sits alongside a full-service kitchen and an outdoor seating area, and the exposed structure, original rafters overhead and concrete underfoot, gives the room an industrial character without anyone having built it to look that way on purpose. The renovation earned the 2023 North Carolina Main Street Award for Best Adaptive Reuse Project, recognition for exactly that kind of honest conversion rather than a themed build-out.
Capacity & Layout
The event space accommodates community events up to 250 people, with both indoor and outdoor components factored into that number. A couple planning near the top of that range needs to think through how much of the party spills outside into the seating area versus stays inside the main room, since the 250 figure spans both rather than describing one enclosed room’s fire-code maximum.
Because the building was designed as a coworking hub first, the layout reads differently than a dedicated event hall: guests move through a space with visible rafters and concrete floors rather than a carpeted ballroom, and the full-service kitchen on site gives caterers a real working kitchen instead of a warming station, which changes what a catering team can realistically serve compared to a venue with no kitchen at all.
Amenities
A full-service kitchen is included, along with the outdoor seating area, both useful anchors for a reception that wants food service and a place for guests to step outside without leaving the property. The building’s original concrete floors and rafters were left in place rather than finished over, and for a couple who wants an industrial, exposed-structure look, that is the amenity: the raw materials of the old warehouse are the design, not a backdrop added later.
The Loading Dock is a veteran and locally owned B Corp founded by entrepreneur Phillip Freeman, and in its first eight months of operation drew more than 300 members representing over 100 companies, context that says less about wedding logistics and more about the kind of place this is: a genuinely active local business hub that happens to rent its event space for evenings and weekends.
Location & Getting There
The building sits on South White Street in downtown Wake Forest, on the site of a former paper company, putting a wedding here within the same walkable district as the town’s shops and restaurants rather than off on its own. For guests staying downtown, that means an easy walk to and from the reception instead of a drive that ends the night early.
With original rafters overhead and bare concrete underfoot, the room carries sound the way older industrial buildings tend to: harder surfaces reflect more than carpet and drywall would, so a DJ setting up here should expect a livelier, more resonant room and plan speaker placement accordingly, aiming sound across the open floor rather than into corners where it would echo back.
