The Space
The building standing on this site today dates to the late 1870s, but it replaces something older: a wooden livery stable believed to have gone up in the 1840s, lost when a fire tore through downtown Abbeville in 1872 and took much of the town with it. What was rebuilt in brick and masonry is the structure still in use now, so a wedding here sits inside a building that has already survived one disaster and outlasted the horse-drawn business it was built for.
After cars replaced carriages, the building spent decades as a warehouse before it was donated to the City of Abbeville in 2002 by Mrs. Margaret Flynn Bowie and the W.G. Bowie Trust, and restored in 2010 with new flooring and exterior work as part of the Trinity Street Enhancement Project. Today it doubles as the home of the Abbeville County Farmers Market, so a couple renting it for a wedding is booking a working piece of the town’s downtown, not a space built to be a wedding venue from the start.
Capacity & Layout
The interior is a semi-outdoor space, which shapes the layout more than a guest count would: with no air conditioning or heat, the room is really an open shelter rather than a sealed hall, so seating, dance floor, and dining tend to sit under cover but open to the air on the sides. Couples should plan around the season more carefully here than at a fully enclosed venue, since summer heat and winter cold both reach the interior.
There is no kitchen on site, so catering has to arrive fully prepared or be finished off-property, which affects both the caterer’s setup time and where food service tables get placed relative to the rest of the layout. The stable does have both men’s and women’s restrooms and electricity run to the building, covering the basics for lighting, sound equipment, and a bar setup even without climate control or a prep kitchen.
Amenities
Booking the space requires a fully refundable $200 security deposit, a modest figure compared to many venues and one more sign that this is a municipally run space rather than a commercial wedding venue with a built-in markup. For any event serving alcohol, the city requires security personnel, two weeks notice, and a $50 per hour charge to cover that security, a detail worth building into the timeline early since it is a notice requirement, not just a fee.
Because the stable is otherwise unadorned, brick walls, an open interior, and basic electric and restroom service, most of what a couple brings in they bring in themselves: rentals, decor, and a caterer who can work without a kitchen. That blank-canvas quality is also what makes it distinctive: few South Carolina liveries like it remain standing, and this one, on Trinity Street in historic downtown Abbeville, is considered an especially fine surviving example.
Location & Getting There
The stable sits on Trinity Street in the historic downtown core of Abbeville, within a small town where the courthouse square, shops, and this building are all part of the same walkable district. Guests coming from out of town get a genuine small-town South Carolina backdrop rather than a generic event hall on a highway, and the Farmers Market history gives the space a lived-in, working character that photographs differently than a purpose-built venue.
With no air conditioning or heat and an open, semi-outdoor structure, sound in the stable does not get trapped and boosted the way it would in a sealed ballroom: a DJ setup here has to work with an interior that lets sound move rather than bounce, generally meaning a cleaner, less echo-heavy mix but also less isolation from whatever is happening outside on Trinity Street.
