The Space

The Laboratory Mill started as a cotton mill around 1887, built beside the South Fork Catawba River, which once turned the mill’s own water wheel to run the machinery inside. During the Civil War era the building also served as a medical laboratory, which is where the venue’s name comes from. Restoration kept the original hardwood flooring, exposed beams, and Queen Anne and Victorian architectural details rather than replacing them, so the building still reads as the working mill it once was.

The main hall keeps its unfinished wood beams, large open windows, and vaulted ceilings, so the room reads as an old mill rather than a finished ballroom dressed up to look historic. The property is protected under covenants held by Preservation North Carolina, part of why the restoration preserved original material instead of stripping it out for a more modern interior, and why the building’s character is locked in rather than subject to a future remodel.

Capacity & Layout

Indoor seating runs up to 450 guests, which puts this on the larger end for a couple planning a big guest list without moving to a hotel ballroom. New HVAC, roofing, and rebuilt windows went in during restoration, so a room this size stays comfortable through a summer reception without losing the exposed-beam character overhead, and the scale of the space means round tables, a dance floor, and a band or DJ setup can all sit inside the room without feeling crowded even at capacity.

The venue includes both indoor space and outdoor areas along the river and among the trees, so a couple can hold the ceremony outside by the water and move the reception in without leaving the property. Two separate kitchens support catering for a crowd this size, and a Get Ready Suite gives the wedding party a place to dress before the ceremony, which keeps hair, makeup, and pre-ceremony photos on site rather than at a hotel across town.

Location & Getting There

The mill sits four miles from downtown Lincolnton and about 30 minutes from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, close enough for a Charlotte-based guest list to make the drive without it becoming a trip in itself, and close enough to Lincolnton for a rehearsal dinner in town the night before.
