The Space

This building did not start out for weddings: in the 1890s it housed the Greenville Gas and Electric Light Company, and Larkin’s Catering & Events has restored it as an event space while leaving the industrial bones exposed. Original hardwood floors, brick walls, and vaulted ceilings carried on steel beams are all still visible and are original to the building rather than added for effect, which is what gives the room its character before a single table is set.

Larkin’s is a family-owned, full-service catering company based in the heart of Greenville, and The L is their venue: they run food, bar, and room set together rather than handing a couple off to outside vendors for each piece. Large ten-foot windows bring in natural light through the day, so afternoon ceremonies and early evening receptions both read well before any event lighting comes on, and the same windows keep the room from feeling like a converted warehouse after dark.

Capacity & Layout

The room holds up to 225 guests standing or 200 seated, so a couple planning a seated dinner has real room to work with while still keeping some open floor for a dance area. Because it is a single flexible space rather than several small rooms, ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception can all happen in the same room with the layout changed between them, which keeps guests from having to relocate and keeps the vendor load-in to one door instead of several.

Rental includes tables, mahogany Chiavari chairs with ivory cushions, lap-length linens in white or black, linen napkins, white china, stainless flatware, and glassware, which covers most of what a couple would otherwise have to rent separately and price out room by room. Event time runs four hours, with two hours before for setup and one hour after for breakdown, seven hours total, so vendors have a defined window to load in and out, and any time booked past that runs at an additional hourly rate.

Amenities

Complimentary parking is available on site, which matters for a downtown venue where street parking can be tight on a weekend evening. Between the brick walls, steel beams, and original hardwood floors, the room does not need much added decor to feel finished, so a couple can lean on the architecture itself rather than covering it up with draping or a false ceiling.

The included place settings, chairs, and linens mean a couple is not sourcing rentals from a separate company and coordinating two delivery schedules; Larkin’s brings catering, bar, and the room together as one booking. The seven-hour window built into the rental gives vendors, including a DJ, a predictable setup and breakdown schedule rather than a rushed turnover between the previous booking and the next one.

Location & Getting There

The L sits steps from Main Street in downtown Greenville, close enough that guests staying downtown can walk over, and close enough to restaurants and hotels that an out-of-town wedding party has options within a few blocks rather than needing a car for the whole weekend.

We have worked a wedding in this room, and the hard surfaces, brick, original hardwood, and the vaulted steel-beam ceiling, carry sound well for a downtown one-room venue: music fills the space evenly, and because there is only the one room, a DJ sets up once and runs ceremony, dinner, and dancing from the same position without moving a system between spaces or losing time to a second load-in.
