The Space
The Flanders opened on July 23, 1923, while still incomplete, built by the Ocean Front Hotel Corporation and designed by architect Vivian B. Smith in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Smith also designed Ocean City’s City Hall, a local high school, and the Music Pier, so the hotel shares its design language with several of the town’s other landmark buildings, not just its own boardwalk block.
It was built using steel girders and concrete and advertised as fireproof, a claim tested and confirmed in 1927, when a boardwalk fire destroyed several nearby buildings but left the Flanders standing intact. Underneath the hotel, catacombs once served as speakeasies through the 1920s and 30s, letting guests move between formal attire and swimwear without being seen doing it, a detail that still shows in the building today.
Capacity & Layout
The main ballroom and dining hall seat 325 for a formal dinner or hold up to 700 for a cocktail-style reception, a wide enough range that the same room can host either an intimate seated wedding or a large standing celebration depending on the format a couple chooses, without the venue needing to move them into a second, separate space for the bigger option.
The hotel now operates as 117 guestrooms and suites, ranging from one-bedroom and two-bedroom units up to penthouse and five-bedroom configurations, a legacy of the building’s 1997 conversion into condominium-style rentals. That range matters for a wedding weekend specifically, since it means the wedding party and out-of-town guests can book directly on property in a size that actually fits their group.
Amenities
Dining on site includes Emily’s Ocean Room for breakfast, lunch, and seasonal dinner, plus Supper Club 1923 for evening drinks and live entertainment after the reception winds down, and Divine Images Salon & Spa operates right in the building as well, which covers a rehearsal dinner, a bridal party’s hair and makeup, and a night out afterward, all without anyone leaving the property.
The hotel’s heated outdoor pool is the largest in Ocean City, and guests also have access to a full fitness center, a business center, and The Shoppes at The Flanders for retail browsing between wedding events, plus free parking, which is not something every boardwalk hotel in this part of the Jersey Shore can actually offer its guests.
Location & Getting There
The Flanders sits directly on the Ocean City Boardwalk, steps from the beach, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 20, 2009, recognized for its architecture, its role in the town’s community development, and its history in entertainment and recreation. Atlantic City International Airport is about 12 miles away for guests flying in, and the hotel is wheelchair accessible and open year-round for any season of wedding.
The main ballroom is a large, formal indoor room built for a hotel-scale event, with the kind of ceiling height and hard, high-end finishes that let a DJ run a full system for up to 700 guests without the sound getting lost, while its 1920s construction and boardwalk setting mean the room was built to handle a crowd from the very start.
