The Space

Colonel Henry Sawyer, a retired Civil War officer, built this hotel in 1875 and 1876 and opened it first as a boarding house. It has been open ever since, and the National Park Service has called it the oldest and most ornate large hotel in Cape May. That continuity is unusual: most historic hotels on this stretch of the Jersey Shore have been rebuilt at least once, but the Chalfonte has operated under its original roof and its original ship-like profile since the 1870s.

The building is a 65-room Victorian inn crowned by an Italianate cupola, and it occupies nearly an entire city block in downtown Cape May. It is a contributing property in the Cape May Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 29, 1970. Wrap-around porches run the length of the building, and the scale of the place, a full city block, means a couple booking here is renting a landmark, not a single banquet room.

Capacity & Layout

The Magnolia Room serves as the hotel’s ballroom for dining and events, and it is where most receptions center. A garden with a willow tree is used for ceremonies, giving couples an outdoor option that stays inside the property line rather than requiring a separate site. Between the two, a couple can walk their ceremony and reception guests across the same grounds without a shuttle or a second venue to coordinate.

Wrap-around verandas are used for cocktail hour, so the flow for a typical wedding day moves from garden ceremony to veranda cocktails to Magnolia Room reception, three distinct settings inside one property. Guest rooms and suites fill out the rest of the Victorian building, ranging from traditional rooms with shared baths to European-style en suite rooms and family suites. That range gives a wedding party several ways to house family without booking a separate hotel block.

Amenities

The Magnolia Room Restaurant has served the same family recipes for more than 90 years, prepared across generations of the Dickerson family, and Southern-style fare from that kitchen is part of what a couple is booking here, not an outside caterer’s menu. The King Edward Bar serves classic cocktails with live music, which gives a reception a built-in bar program rather than one assembled for the day.

Ownership passed from Anne de Luc to Robert Mullock in 2008, and the hotel has stayed a continuously run property rather than sitting vacant between owners. Guest rooms and suites throughout the building mean out-of-town family can stay where the wedding happens. Wrap-around porches double as covered outdoor space for cocktails or a quiet moment away from the reception.

Location & Getting There

The hotel sits two blocks from the beach in downtown Cape May, close enough that guests can walk to the water between events without a car. It occupies nearly a full city block, so the property itself, gardens, porches, and ballroom included, has room to spread a wedding day out. In 1888, the Philadelphia Phillies stayed here during spring training and practiced at the athletic park behind the hotel, a detail that says how long this address has hosted visitors.
