The Space
The Blalock House is a Classical Revival home built around 1910 and listed on both the North Carolina State Register and the National Register of Historic Places as of 2005. Designed by a builder from neighboring Johnston County and built for Dr. Nathan M. Blalock, a pioneering rural physician, the house features a full-height pedimented portico supported by two pairs of fluted wood Ionic columns and a one-story wraparound porch. The architectural style and original craftsmanship make the home a distinctive backdrop for celebrations. Inside, eight fireplaces are found throughout the house, each unique with custom tile work and several featuring mirrored over-mantels. The main house is accompanied by contributing outbuildings including a well house, a children’s playhouse with multi-gabled design, and a low wall of stone and cement.
The property encompasses nearly one acre and is set in a country setting filled with antiques, creating a period atmosphere. Both indoor and outdoor space is fully customizable for events.
Capacity & Layout
The house contains five bedrooms and 5,000 square feet of interior space. Guests can stay overnight, whether as part of the event or through an Airbnb arrangement separate from your wedding planning. The indoor and outdoor spaces are flexible, allowing you to design ceremony, reception, dining, and dancing configurations that suit your guest count and vision. The property’s setting means you’re not confined to a single ballroom or event hall, but rather using the home itself as your venue.
The outbuildings and grounds provide additional gathering and photo opportunities beyond the main house. The property feels like a private celebration at a historic home, not a commercial event space.
Amenities
The house’s five bedrooms and 5,000 square feet mean extended family or close friends can stay on-site. The property’s antique-filled interior provides decorative character without additional floral or design installation. Climate control keeps guests comfortable. Multiple fireplaces offer visual interest and ambiance, especially for cooler months. Outdoor grounds provide space for tents, dance floors, or additional gathering areas if needed.
Being a historic house now used as a wedding venue and Airbnb, the property has been thoughtfully maintained for guests. The National Register listing reflects the home’s architectural and historical significance, and that significance is evident in the original details, craftsmanship, and setting.
Location & Getting There
The Blalock House sits in a rural area outside Raleigh, North Carolina, in Wake County. The countryside setting places the venue between town and open farmland, giving the celebration a sense of place while remaining accessible from Raleigh and surrounding communities. Dr. Blalock’s original property grew from 163 acres in the 1860s to nearly 1,000 acres during his lifetime, and the current property retains that rural character. The location is manageable for Raleigh-area guests without requiring a long drive.
We’ve worked at The Blalock House. The home’s interior spaces with eight distinct fireplaces and period plaster create variable acoustics depending on which rooms you use for your celebration. The wraparound porch and outdoor grounds are semi-open environments with different acoustic properties than an enclosed ballroom. A DJ setup needs to account for these varied spaces: the indoors with fireplaces and period architecture creates natural acoustic definition, while outdoor areas carry sound more openly. The mix of hard and soft surfaces (period furniture, curtains, floorboards) creates balanced sound without excessive reflection or deadening.
