The Space

Temple Emanuel began in 1907 as the Greensboro Reform Congregation, its first services held on the High Holy Days in rented rooms above a grocery store on South Elm Street. A year later the young congregation bought a former Friends Church on East Lee Street, its first permanent home. By 1949 the congregation had taken the name Temple Emanuel, honoring Emanuel Sternberger, and had grown well past that first small building on Lee Street.

The congregation now maintains two sanctuaries. The Greene Street building, designed by architect Hobart Upjohn and completed in 1924, is a Georgian-style sanctuary known for its slender columns and Corinthian capitals, and sits inside the Fisher Park National Register Historic District. In 1995 the congregation bought ten acres on suburban Jefferson Road, and a second sanctuary opened there in 2002. Today Temple Emanuel counts roughly 588 to 600 member families, one of the larger Jewish congregations in the Piedmont.

Capacity & Layout

The Jefferson Road campus is built around a sanctuary for worship paired with separate meeting spaces for education and community events, plus an Early Childhood Engagement Center on the same grounds. That separation matters for a wedding: the room used for a ceremony is not competing for space with classrooms or offices, and a couple can move a reception into an adjoining meeting space without asking guests to leave the building.

At the older Greene Street sanctuary, layout is shaped by its architecture. The Georgian design carries slender columns with Corinthian capitals through the room, which is handsome to look at but worth planning around when placing rows of chairs or a head table, since sightlines bend around the columns rather than running straight to the front. This sanctuary is used today for High Holy Day services and for special events, alongside the newer Jefferson Road building.

Amenities

The Jefferson Road campus is wheelchair accessible, a detail worth knowing for guests who need level access into a sanctuary that also serves as the congregation’s main worship space. Its most distinctive built feature is an 18-foot rock wall constructed of sand-colored stones imported from Israel, a serious architectural statement that gives the room a backdrop unlike anything else on a Piedmont venue list.

Temple Emanuel is affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism, and its history is documented back to 1907, including the 1923 vote to admit women as full members, a marker of the congregation’s identity long before either sanctuary was built. For a couple marrying within the Jewish tradition, that continuous institutional history, not a rented hall standing in for one, is itself part of what the space offers.

Location & Getting There

The Jefferson Road campus sits on a ten-acre suburban tract the congregation purchased in 1995 specifically because it had outgrown its in-town building, so guests should expect a drive out from central Greensboro rather than a downtown address. The scale of the property, ten acres against the tight in-town lot on Lee Street where the congregation started, gives this campus room to spread out that the original building never had.

The Greene Street sanctuary, by contrast, sits inside the Fisher Park National Register Historic District close to downtown Greensboro, in a neighborhood of preserved early twentieth century architecture. A couple choosing between the two campuses is really choosing between an in-town historic setting and a newer suburban one. Either sanctuary is a hard-surfaced room of stone, plaster, and columns, and a DJ setting up there should plan for natural reverberation rather than a heavily carpeted, sound-dead ballroom.
