The Space

Stony Woods Estate is built around a 4-acre home site inside 85 gated acres in the mountains west of Marshall, and the estate was designed with the views in mind: the property is described as having mountain vistas from virtually every spot on it, not just a single overlook. The Villa, the estate’s mountain craftsman style home, was designed by architect Robert Griffin, with the surrounding grounds laid out by landscape architect Dennis Turner.

Ceremonies typically happen on an outdoor lawn on the hilltop, with the mountain views doing most of the visual work behind the couple.

Receptions move to a tent on the upper patio or the lawn, and the Villa itself has a roughly 500 square foot primary event space plus additional gathering rooms inside the home that can double as bridal suites or break-out areas for a smaller group. That layout gives a couple room to keep the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception each in a distinct part of the property rather than resetting one room three times over the course of the day. Outdoor events run seasonally, since the estate does not host them outdoors from mid-November through the end of February.

Amenities

A separate bridal suite is attached to the Villa with its own kitchenette, bedroom, small living room, and full bathroom, giving the wedding party a real place to get ready rather than a shared corner of the house. The estate itself sleeps 10 across its 5 bedrooms, and the on-site Treesort adds treehouse cabins, two one-bedroom studios and three two-bedroom units, each with its own theme, for guests who want to stay on the property rather than book a hotel room 40 minutes away in Asheville.
