The Space
Starclaire Recreation Club has been a fixture in South Charlotte’s Starmount neighborhood since 1961, built on land donated by Crosland and Ervin to serve the Montclaire, Starmount, and Madison Park neighborhoods, whose names were combined to create Starclaire itself. A couple booking a reception here is working with a genuine neighborhood swim and tennis club rather than a venue built to imitate one.
The club sits on 12 acres and underwent a complete renovation in 2019 and 2020 after being purchased by Starclaire Recreation Partners, LLC that April, so the pool, courts, and pavilion a couple tours today are recently updated rather than original 1961 construction. The property also connects directly to the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, giving the grounds a wooded edge beyond the pool deck and courts.
Capacity & Layout
The main pool holds 170,000 gallons and includes 6 lap lanes with starting blocks, a 42-foot step entry, and a splash pad, while a separate Tiny Palm Pool, capped at one foot deep, is built specifically for children age 6 and under. That separation matters for a wedding day with young guests on the list: little ones have their own shallow area rather than sharing the lap pool with adults.
Beyond the pools, the grounds include two tennis courts, four pickleball courts, and a regulation sand volleyball court, so a reception here has real outdoor square footage to spread across for cocktail hour or lawn games rather than a single fixed footprint. The large covered pavilion, set up with four picnic tables, is the club’s built-in event space and where a reception itself is most likely to center.
Amenities
The pavilion is covered, which gives a couple a weather hedge on an outdoor booking without needing a rented tent, and its picnic-table setup signals the kind of casual, club-cookout feel this venue leans into rather than a formal ballroom look. The splash pad and Tiny Palm Pool double as built-in entertainment for kids at a family-heavy guest list.
We have worked an event at Starclaire before, so we know the layout of the pavilion relative to the pool deck already. The club also hosts the Starclaire Dolphins swim team and has run its renovated pool as a practice and summer camp facility for the Queens University of Charlotte swimming program, both signs of a well-used, well-maintained facility rather than a quiet, rarely-touched property.
Location & Getting There
The club is in the historic Starmount neighborhood of South Charlotte, and normal club hours run Monday through Friday from 10am to 8pm, Saturday from 9am to 8pm, and Sunday from 11am to 8pm, hours worth checking against a wedding date since they reflect a working recreation club with its own regular members and schedule, not a dedicated event venue open around the clock.
Because the pavilion is an open-air, covered structure rather than an enclosed room, a DJ setting up there is working with outdoor sound: no walls to hold reverb, more distance for speakers to cover across the pool deck and lawn, and weather to plan around even under the roof, all of which shapes how equipment gets placed and pointed for the reception.
