The Space

The Southport Community Building started as a USO building, dedicated in 1942 to give military personnel stationed in the area somewhere to go for movies, dances, and indoor games, and that original purpose, a hall built for gathering and dancing, is still what the room does today. It sits at historic Fort Johnston, on the banks of the Cape Fear River where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Intracoastal Waterway.

The main hall itself runs over 2,400 square feet of flexible space, with covered porches and a deck on the building, giving a couple both an enclosed hall and shaded outdoor space without leaving the property. From the deck and porch, Old Baldy Lighthouse, the oldest in North Carolina, and Oak Island Lighthouse, the newest in the state, are both visible offshore, a genuinely rare pairing to have in view from a single wedding venue.

Capacity & Layout

Fire marshal capacity sets the hard number at 160 seated guests, with up to 200 allowed if the layout goes standing, so a couple planning a seated dinner reception should treat 160 as the real ceiling rather than an estimate. That is a mid-sized number, comfortable for a wedding that wants a full room without needing an oversized hall.

The venue includes its own furniture rather than requiring rentals: 21 round 60 inch tables, 15 rectangular 72 inch tables, smaller round and square tables for cocktail or lounge seating, 180 white folding chairs, and 6 wooden benches. That inventory is large enough to lay out a full seated dinner, a separate cocktail area, and overflow seating all from the venue’s own stock, which meaningfully cuts down what a couple needs to rent elsewhere.

Amenities

The bridal suite is built specifically around getting ready as a group: a full-length mirror, French doors opening onto the deck, vanity stations, a lounge area, changing screens for privacy, and a complimentary essentials cart. That level of detail, changing screens and an essentials cart specifically, suggests a room designed by people who have watched a lot of wedding mornings unfold and built around what actually goes wrong.

Booking includes 12 hours of venue access, from 8am to 12am, with additional hours available at $100 to $350 depending on the day and package, so a couple can plan a full day, ceremony through late reception, without racing a shorter rental window. Full wheelchair accessibility, ramps at every entrance, and hearing-impaired alarm systems make the building usable for a wide range of guests, not just the wedding party.
