The Space
Second Empire occupies the Dodd-Hinsdale House, a Victorian mansion built in 1879 in downtown Raleigh, restored and operating as a restaurant since 1998. The building itself splits into two distinct characters: an upstairs formal dining room with the polish of the original Victorian house, and a downstairs tavern with a more casual, relaxed feel, so a couple can choose which register fits their event before a single table is set.
Four private dining rooms are available for events: the Pine Room, the Raleigh Room, the Capitol Room, and the Atrium Room, each with its own name and character rather than an interchangeable banquet space. The restaurant has earned the AAA Four Diamond Award three times, making it the only Raleigh restaurant to hold it, along with a DiRoNA Award twice and eight consecutive years of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.
Capacity & Layout
On their own, the four private rooms seat modest groups, the Pine Room holds 40, the Atrium Room 50, and the Raleigh and Capitol Rooms 25 each, which makes them well suited to a rehearsal dinner or a smaller wedding party. Combined together, the rooms can accommodate up to 300 guests, turning what is normally a restaurant’s private dining program into a genuine wedding reception space when a couple needs the larger footprint.
That combinable layout means a couple’s guest list drives the decision directly: a small, intimate dinner can take over just the Pine Room or the Atrium Room, while a larger wedding reception opens up the full run of private rooms across both the upstairs formal space and the downstairs tavern. For a couple who wants a smaller, more personal event, the restaurant’s chef’s table, seating two to four guests inside the kitchen itself, is a distinct option beyond even the private rooms.
Amenities
A full bar operates on site, and the restaurant’s own culinary reputation, three AAA Four Diamond Awards, two DiRoNA Awards, and eight straight years of Wine Spectator recognition between 1999 and 2006, means catering here is not an outside vendor brought in for the day but the restaurant’s own kitchen doing what it does nightly. Wheelchair access is available throughout the building.
Parking is complimentary in a small lot at the rear of the restaurant, accessed from Edenton Street, with additional spaces available in the nearby Reynolds Building lot, useful in a downtown setting where street parking can otherwise be scarce. The restaurant’s normal service runs dinner Tuesday through Saturday, 5pm to 10pm, a detail worth checking against a wedding’s planned timeline since it reflects the hours the kitchen and staff are typically running.
Location & Getting There
The Dodd-Hinsdale House sits in downtown Raleigh, a restored 1879 Victorian mansion on a city block rather than a rural property, which means guests are arriving into an urban, walkable setting with nearby parking lots rather than a long country drive. That downtown location suits a couple who wants a historic building without leaving the city for their wedding.
Upstairs, the formal dining rooms carry the Victorian house’s original proportions, smaller, more enclosed rooms where a DJ’s system fills a contained space quickly and cleanly. Downstairs, the tavern’s more casual, open layout gives sound room to move more freely across a bigger, less compartmentalized floor, so the character of the music and the room shifts depending on whether the reception lands upstairs or down.
