The Space
The main house at Scarborough House dates to 1821 and is the oldest standing structure in Wilson County, built originally by African American craftsmen for Major James Scarborough and once used as a stagecoach stop. The property carries that history into its listing on the National Historic Registry, and while it was modernized in the 1990s, it has also been extensively updated over the past three years, so the historic bones sit alongside newer finishes throughout.
Beyond the main house, the roughly 3-acre property includes a Farmhouse guest home, a beach-themed Pool House, a Groom’s Suite, and the Magnolia Pavilion, a covered event space built in part from reclaimed barn beams dating to the early 1800s. That pavilion, rather than the historic house itself, is where the reception happens, giving the property a working reception venue built specifically for events alongside the historic home that guests come to see.
Capacity & Layout
Scarborough House can seat up to 225 guests and hold up to 275 standing, a wide enough range that the venue works for both an intimate ceremony and a large reception without outgrowing the property. Five separate ceremony locations are available, including an open field framed by mature trees and a wooden arbor, so a couple has real choice in backdrop rather than a single fixed ceremony spot.
The Magnolia Pavilion serves as the primary reception space, with an indoor-outdoor flow that lets guests move between covered and open air without a hard transition, plus a custom bar built into the room. Overnight accommodation is available on site for up to 26 guests across the Historic Home, Farmhouse, and Pool House, which matters for a couple planning a multi-day wedding weekend rather than a single day with everyone driving home that night.
Amenities
The bridal suite occupies one of four bedrooms in the Historic Home, giving the wedding party a dedicated space to get ready inside the oldest building on the property rather than a generic side room. Parking accommodates more than 100 vehicles, with covered RV hookups for four, which is worth knowing for guests planning to camp or arrive by RV for a rural property like this one.
The Magnolia Pavilion comes with a custom bar and a professional sound system already built into the space, which simplifies the audio setup for a DJ working the reception. Between the historic main house, the purpose-built pavilion, and the separate guest houses, the property functions less like a single venue and more like a small campus, where getting ready, ceremony, reception, and overnight stays each have their own building.
Location & Getting There
We’ve worked a wedding at Scarborough House, and the drive out to Stantonsburg is part of the experience: the property sits roughly 36 miles from Wilson and about 50 miles from Raleigh, a genuinely rural setting rather than a suburban venue with a highway exit nearby. That distance is worth planning around for guests traveling from the Triangle, since it puts real drive time on both ends of the day.
With overnight accommodation on site, out-of-town guests do not need to factor a hotel and a night drive into the plan, they can simply stay where the wedding happened. Inside the Magnolia Pavilion, the covered, timber-framed structure and its built-in sound system give a DJ a defined, semi-enclosed room to fill, while the open field ceremony site nearby stays true outdoor sound, open to the trees and sky around the arbor.
